Donut Jr. is getting into golf, and on Saturday asked if we could watch Happy Gilmore. He's heard about it, and he's even pretty good at doing the walk up shuffle approach to hit driver. But he had never seen it. So while the girls were out shopping Saturday night, we downloaded and fired up the TBS app (didn't know that was a thing, but, thanks JustWatch for pointing me there) and watched it. Lots of giggles from him (puberty in full bloom, so his voice is in prime cracking stage right now, which I am thoroughly enjoying), but he didn't like it as much as I thought he would. In fairness, it wasn't as entertaining as I remembered, either. DJ called it "Napoleon Dynamite for golfers." Not a perfect comparison, but I can see some similarities.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

I saw "See How They Run" a few weeks back. Really liked it. An Agatha Christie-style murder mystery that makes fun of Agatha Christie murder mysteries and is low-key hilarious in the process. Adrien Brodie is in it, and he plays his part well. The rest of the cast are English actors that I don't really recognize, but it's worth the watch, IMO.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

"The Banshees of Inisherin". This came out right in my Ireland high, so I was excited to see it. Takes place in the 1920's on a fake island off of Ireland, but historically the Aran or Blasket islands. The cinematography was beautiful, and Mrs. NWC and I smiled in delight any time we saw a familiar landscape. Acting and dialogue were also above average. The plot, well, it's a head scratcher. Certainly more of a character-driven movie. I like it more than I don't, but YMMV."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Thanks for the qualified rec. I like the trailer even though the storyline seems a bit too contrived. Looking forward to revisiting the Aran Islands.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post"The Banshees of Inisherin". This came out right in my Ireland high, so I was excited to see it. I saw The Banshees of Inisherin about a week ago and still not sure about it. I suppose because it's not the most uplifting of movies but cinematography, acting, writing all were very good (as you stated). Keep thinking there is a deep metaphor I'm missing. In the hopes of understanding the film better, I rewatched In Bruges by the same director with the same lead actors. That didn't really help but I enjoyed the dark humor in In Bruges much more. In Bruges is the more violent film (by far) but I was affected more by the violence in Banchees.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View Post"The Banshees of Inisherin". It's received tepid reviews overall (68% on RT, 6.8 on IMDB), but the wife and I liked Spirited , a modern, musical take on A Christmas Carol featuring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer. The dialogue has a number of good lines and the production numbers are very impressive, although if you're indifferent to--or simply dislike--musicals, stay away. But since it's free on AppleTV, you can watch for a few minutes and figure out pretty quickly whether it's worth two hours of your time. It was for us, with a lot of laughs.

We really enjoyed this also, though the free aspect of it probably helped. Ryan Reynolds dreaminess and comic chops certainly didn't hurt, and Will Ferrell was also solid. Agree with the musical numbers, and I'm not a huge musical fan.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostIt's received tepid reviews overall (68% on RT, 6.8 on IMDB), but the wife and I liked Spirited , a modern, musical take on A Christmas Carol featuring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer. My daughter said Elf is a movie you can watch any time during the year, but Spirited will be pretty good for repeated Christmas viewing. I agree with that hot take."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Because my daughter wanted us to watch 'Euphoria', and after one episode I knew I didn't want to watch something that depressing. With her commie gen Z angst and Mrs. NWC's refusal to feed into that, Spirited was about the only thing that we all could agree on.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWhy are you people watching Christmas movies?
