  • I am glad they went with Penny Benjamin instead of Charlie Blackwood. Can you believe that Kelly McGillis is only 5 years older than Tom Cruise? Almost makes me want to get audited...

I took my daughters to see the movie tonight. The youngest kept asking about how Penny was connected. I told her (repeatedly) to be quiet and that I would explain after the movie.

I was worried that I'd built up the anticipation too high and would be disappointed. I was not disappointed.

After the movie, I asked the girls what their favorite part of the movie was. They both responded with the same moment:

      Spoiler for Daughters' favorite moment:
      Maverick: What were you thinking?

Rooster: You told me not to think!

Yeah, that was such a great line.

            • Top Gun Maverick was fantastic. Everything you could want out of a movie.

I have a buddy that is already mad at me though. I said Top Gun Maverick is to Top gun what The Force Awakens is to A New Hope. Plot we are familiar with, can pretty much guess how it turns out, and it introduces a bunch of new characters. I loved the first iteration and I loved the last one as well.

              Will watch again.

              • I watched the latest Cronenberg film this week, Crimes of the Future (which is not related at all to Cronenberg's other film called Crimes of the Future - wth). Great cast: Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux, Kristin Stewart. Really, really bizarre plot.

                Spoiler for Plot:
Basically, in the not-too-distant future, humans begin to evolve more rapidly, with some people like Viggo's character developing whole new organs. Viggo and his partner, Seydoux, are perfomance artists and Seydoux performs surgery on Viggo in public to remove the new organs. The government doesn't like the evolution, so they are trying to get catalog the new organs and isolate those who can produce them. There's some other stuff about wanting to be able to eat plastic, so they undergo voluntary surgery to change their digestive systems.

Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

                • Finally saw Top Gun last night and it was entertaining. It felt like Star Wars meets An Officer and a Gentleman but it was good.

                  • Geez I think I watched Top Gun out of peer pressure, but I was planning on seeing it anyway pre-covid. Anyway-- it was enjoyable. At least as good as Dr. Strange. I liked all the new kids, including the Ice Man 2.0 and the new Goose. If we're being real, Maverick should have picked Hangman as his wingman, but it all worked out, didn't it? I was pretty touched that Val Kilmer was included in what may very well be his last real movie role. If you don't know his deal, please check out the awesome documentary about him on Hulu asap.

                    • I liked Maverick too. I've seen it twice. The first time, I thought it was a little too nostalgic and a little cheesy. The second time, I actually liked it better. Not sure why, but it was just a ton of fun.

                              • I saw Top Gun last weekend. Everyone said it was the perfect 80's action film. I agree. Also, shitty. So cliche, so predictable, so safe. There was absolutely no mystery what was going to happen in each scene and little enjoyment watching it unfold.
