Age of Adaline - Blake Lively ceases to age after being hit by lightning. Super wealthy handsome guy falls in love with her. Not bad, but not particularly good. Forgettable.
Dope - Nerdy, 90s hip-hop obsessed kid in Inglewood is, due to various contrived developments, forced to find a way to sell a backpack full of drugs. Based on the trailer, I had hoped for more. Better than Age of Adaline, but over the course of the movie it went from feeling somewhat newish and interesting to feeling something like a safe re-tread. Solid job by the actors playing the main kid and his friends.
People, Places, Things - After catching his wife en flagrante with an off-broadway monologuist, Jemaine Clement struggles with life as a separated father of twin girls. Not great, but decent. Clement is great in the role.Comment

Spotlight is one of the best movies of the year, with several great performances by a strong cast, excellent pacing, and a story that’s fascinating and disturbing. It’s about the Spotlight investigative news team at the Boston Globe that reported the widespread abuse by priests and the cover-up by Cardinal Law and many dozens of others in authority. But it’s also an interesting look at what goes into getting such a story, and not even the press is without some fault which becomes sadly evident.
I’ve always liked the opening of All the President’s Men (another great movie about cover-ups and investigative journalism), with the close-up of a typewriter’s keys printing—actually, smashing—out the date of the Watergate break-in, with each keystroke amplified to sound like whiplashes. It was a compelling symbol of the power of the press. The final few minutes of Spotlight, including the closing captions, put that power on full display.Comment

We took the kids to The Good Dinosaur. Amazing and really beautiful animation in this movie. I liked the story although it's very predictable stuff -- the kids were saying on the way home how parts of it were very similar to Finding Nemo and The Lion King (not that that's a bad thing necessarily.) Funniest line has to do with Dreamcrusher, who protects the weird Triceratops from having unrealistic goals.
We watched The Gift recently too. That was excellent -- Jason Bateman does the smug asshole character better than anybody else I think.Comment
