First one is a documentary titled Dear Zachary (on Netflix). IMDB rating = 8.6. For the greatest impact, I highly recommend you watch it without learning much about it. All you need to know is that it is a movie made by a filmmaker to the son of his best friend that was murdered. It is inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. Probably the most emotionally impactful thing I have ever watched. Going to be haunted by this one for a while.

Also watched Jagten (The Hunt). IMDB rating = 8.3. Danish film with English subtitles (and a fair amount of English dialogue) about a guy in a small town falsely accused of a crime. Brilliantly-written script with outstanding acting. Highly recommended.
Well, you got 1 out of 2 right. Surprised you didn't reference The Hunt in your recent rage against the lynch mob machine.

Watched Blue Ruin the other day (on Netflix). Gritty revenge thriller in the style of Coen's Blood Simple. The standoff at the end was a bit far-fetched, but whatever. 7/10. Worth a bag of microwave popcorn.

The Hunt is fantastic, isn't it? One of those movies that haunts you for a while.

I was disappointed in Blue Ruin. It had a lot of potential but fizzled.

Started Dear Zachary (I watch Netflix while riding the trainer), and find it riveting. Looking forward to the Jagten as well. Thanks for the recommendations. That is to JL of course.

        • A shout out to JL for two excellent recommendations in "Dear Zachary" and "Jagten." Awaiting more Netflix recommendations as those were some of the better films I've watched at home or in the theater.

          • spectre. pretty disappointed that this is how they ended it. the whole "it was us all along" makes no sense given the context of the other movies and was dumb. why not do more exposition with the waltz character and bond's past/parents? not very impressed with anything in this except the db10 which was sweet.

              • Let me throw my review for Spectre into the ring. They did a lot right with this outing. That intro tho. Unbelievable. Great setting, great music, crazy reckless with the helicopter. Bond clearly does not gaf. One of my favorite Bond settings was New Orleans in Live and Let Die with the voodoo funeral, etc. but they one up that with the Day of the Dead in Mexico City. Gorgeously shot.

They throw in more traditional Bond staples with the henchman pursuit, the rando seduction of Monica Bellucci , banter with Money Penny and Q, a stern talking-to from M, etc. and casting Waltz as Dr. Evil (complete with white persian kitty and cool zip up jacket). This may be the end of Daniel Craig's run as 007, but we have not seen the last of Waltz, who will undoubtedly have a gnarly eye patch and scar next time. As one reviewer put it, this was kind of a 007 travelogue. We have a chase in Rome, a chase on the slopes in Austria, tense action in Mexico City and back in Jolly London.

What didn't really work too well was the sort of underutilization of Waltz, who was menacing no doubt, but he is really capable of so much more. Just one scene similar to the opening of Inglorious Basterds would have done the trick for the exposition we were sorely missing. That left a hole in the payoff the audience deserved, I think. Same with the "girl" in this. She was cool and all, but I didn't get the sense she was there long enough for that ending to make sense.

I enjoyed it, but it's not as good as Casino Royale, and maybe not as good as Skyfall.

yes. It felt like a bunch of writers sat around and said, "Let's have a car chase," and "let's have action on a train," and "let's go to Africa." A bunch of different scenes strung together.

                  • Specter was a nice distraction. Casino Royale is still my favorite DC movie.

                    • Finally got around to watching Magic Mike XXL. I was a huge fan of the first movie but this one was so disappointing. Plot was lame, dialogue sounded impromptu, Joe Mangienello might be easy on the eyes, but he bellows every single line. Characterization was very trite and tired. But most disappointing, Channing Tatum was overweight and doughy and they had to draw muscles on him. Michael Strahan almost made up for it, but no.

I think I'll go back and watch "Pony" from the first one.

The best thing for me about Magic Mike XXL is the Conan bit where he takes a bunch of ladies on a ladies' night out to see it.

Interesting. I haven't watched either , but Mrs. NWC has. She preferred the second over the first.
