Speaking of sunset photos, this is one that I took last summer from my front patio. I don't remember the exposure or focal length.

Exactly. I brought the photo into Lightroom and discovered the following metadata:

Exposure: 1/80 sec at f/5.3
ISO setting 400
Focal length 45mm (67mm equivalent on a 35mm camera)
Shot on a Nikon D50

Edit: And shot on 7/5/2007 at 5:50pm

No way that shot was taken at 5:50 pm in the middle of July in Utah. 5:50 pm on a summer evening in Utah might as well be 2:30 p.m. That's like an 8:45 p.m. shot.

I dont think FN's wife has the software to process RAW, although SPace Ghost would know if there's any open source software around. I've found it sort of hard to use the free stuff.

Paint.Net Is a simple open source program.

I don't think it can do everything the Gimp can do, but the interface is more straight forward.

I posted the wrong time. I saw the number 17:50 and assumed it was set to a 24 hour clock. I missed the 8. The photo was take at 8:17pm (10 seconds before 8:18pm). This is according to the camera's internal clock, which might be wrong, but would probably only reflect a timezone shift, and not some random date and time. A sunrise/sunset calender shows that the SLC sunset on July 5, 2007 was 9:01pm, so the quality of light depicted in the image seems about right for the 8:17pm shoot time.

I think Google's Picasa handles RAW files. It is also really easy to use. Most cameras that produce RAW files also come with RAW converters, so the FN's wife might already have the software. Finally, any number of paid programs is going to be a heckuva lot cheaper than a Canon 430EX.

I hesitate to ask this because I know the answer will only lead to me spending more money but.... what is a good editing software that people are using? I don't want to get the top of the line but I would like something that can handle what she will be throwing it. Any ideas?

I hate to sound like a broken record but thank you all for your comments. It is helping my wife immensely.

Ok, ok. I finally joined so FN Phat won't give me smart remarks anymore. I am his wife and he has been posting my pics. I am so new to photography and with 3 kids under the age of 4 1/2, I don't have much spare time to sit and read about how to take a picture. I lied. I do have spare time, but I make hair bows and boutique-y things so that's where my spare time goes. However, if Phat wants to pony up some cash to get me an editing program, I will be more than happy to put the crafting on hold.

I have downloaded GIMP. I use it to make bottlecap images. Have no clue how to use it for anything else though. I mostly use Picasa and Picnik.

I am open to any and all help, as I will be posting pics here often...I think. Remember I am not a photog...so lamens terms PLEASE!

Darn Darn Darn

This evening I went to scout out the Utah Ore Sampling Co in Murray. When I'm scouting, I dont bring a telephoto lens, or a tripod. Mostly I'm just checking out how the light falls, noting when sunset hits, and mundane things like where to park. Then I go back later to take the real pictures.

I've had my eye on this building for a while, with its faded marquee and its blown out windows. I was hoping to be able to get some great sunset light through the windows. Unfortunately, there is too much spring foliage and it's blocking the light. For a bleaker look, with more long length light, I need to come back in the winter. Sheist. Five more months. I'll put a reminder in my shooting diary. I might try a sunrise, to try and see if I can catch the rising sun reflected in the windows.

I recently drove along the Columbia River gorge on a clear blue sky day (more of a rarity than most would imagine). I wish I knew how to do more with photoshop to improve the quality of these pics, especially the B&W with Mt. Hood in the background.

Photos of the Columbia River and Mt. Hood. I didn't have the best angle with the wind surfers. I would have liked a close up with Hood in the distance.

Neither of these pictures were very good quality (I didn't have a tripod so I had to balance my camera on guardrail post with a slow shutter) but I liked that both were taken at the same time. The moon just cresting the mountainside was looking at the river to the east, Mt. Hood and the remaining sunset were taken to the west.

That second photo of yours is very marketable. I've been trying to do more commercial photos lately.
