I know where this is. My friend owns the auto auction in the foreground. We always thought it would be awesome to turn that old building into a haunted house, although I'm sure at least 10 people would die on opening night.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Great photos. I have some questions.Originally posted by Space GhostWe spent the evening of the 4th at the lake-front home of a friend. The skies were overcast, the ambient air temperature was in the high 50s, and there was a bit of a drizzle.

the dock where we set up our chairs to watch the fireworks.

a campfire to take the chill off.

after dusk... looking back at our friends lake-front home.

activity on the neighboring docks started at around 10pm.

the immediate neighboring lot (and dock) to the North is owned by the folks that do the pyrotechnics inside the Tacoma Dome. They use red flares for illumination.

2 of 5 (Staying Warm): Do you have your EXIF info for this one? (Mostly what your exposure was, if you had additional lighting, or post processing, and what type of lens)
I really like how the firelight casts a yellow hue on the faces. Look how the corner of the paddleboat facing the fire is yellow compared to the rest of it. I know that generally you're not supposed to mix your lighting, but I really like the yellowing effect--I think it pulls your viewers into the fire pit area, and conveys warmth.
3 of 5 (House): The colors are great here. My work monitor shows them as lovely violet purplish blues. I think the lights from the house are slightly blown out, and I wonder if you had to make the choice to blow out the highlights, or underexpose the lovely purple hues in the rest of the photo. This is the one thing I am dissatisfied with my Nikon, it tends to render purples as more bluish. My favorite part of this picture is the yellow highlights on the dock, with the white sparkles.Last edited by Katy Lied; 07-06-2010, 12:15 PM.

I like the 4th photo here. It's much simpler, with mostly white light, and I like the white dots in the background. Looks kind of like a cosmic palm tree.Originally posted by Space GhostWe spent the evening of the 4th at the lake-front home of a friend. Their neighbors to the immediate North run the pyrotechnics for the Tacoma Dome (e.g. truck pulls and the like). I took these pictures of the fireworks that were exploding overhead. My camera was fully zoomed out at 24mm.
Pictures 1-4: f/20, 8.0s, ISO160
Picture 5: f/22, 30.0s, ISO160
.
Just to clarify, you mean a shutter speed of 8.0, not 8.0 actual second of exposure, right?
If you were fully zoomed, what is your lens range? It must be quite theexpensivewide angle zoom lens.Last edited by Katy Lied; 07-06-2010, 12:21 PM.

I hope to remember these tips for the next fireworks show that we go to. We spent the 4th on the lake and wanted to take pics but couldn't get any to come out at all.I'm your huckleberry.

My compliments to all the photogs, there are a lot of great photos in this thread.
I have got to get my camera (Canon A-1) out and start taking pictures again. It's been too long, and I'm probably a bit rusty.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."

I did, but didn't win anything.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostThat is a really great photo. I would have that hanging in our office in a second.
Did you ever enter the water fountain contest way back when?
I've been using a manual focus lens lately. Its funny; I will take a burst of pictures and then I'll chimp and realize that none of them is in focus because I forgot to focus. I've been using autofocus for so long, I dont remember to focus when I have to.
You can get really good lenses cheap if you're willing to manual focus yourself. And it feels cool to know the lost art of focusing.

I've always look at autofocus lenses as cheating. But I'm a bit old school when it comes to photography.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostI did, but didn't win anything.
