I got Ho Chi Minh City and was off by 4 years. I got Birmingham but was way off on the year. I went with Munich on the German one, which was relatively close, but was way off on the year there, too. I thought the Trump rally might have been leading up to the New Hampshire primary, so I was a fair amount off on the location and off by one year.
I haven't created an account either.

I whiffed on a lot. 32,773. Got Morroco (chose Tangier), guessed Ho Chi Minh instead of Hanoi (I don't know jack about VN war), Got Alabama reasonably close, but how was that a picture from the 2000s??

449.7 km -- I was originally thinking the 50's for this one, but then I notice a woman wearing slacks, so I moved it up to the 62. Didn't move it far enough. I picked the city of Essen because that means food and there was an ice cream store in the picture.

        • 48,299. Easy one today. Easily my highest score yet.

          0 yrs off - 2.4 km - Easy one.

          2)9918 pts
1 yrs off - 1.0 km - When did Castro come to power? I knew it was right around that time.

          3)9790 pts
2 yrs off - 520.6 m - The map on the table helps. But knowing the UK helped me. Hard to pin down the exact year though.

          4)8707 pts
3 yrs off - 393.4 km - This was the hardest one, but that has polka written all over it. Couple clues it was in the 70s as well. Look at the one guy's silvery jacket and look at the lady's high hairdo plus the clarity of the photo.

          5)9947 pts
          0 yrs off - 2.1 km - Total gimme.

27 yrs off - 585.1 m - Having stood there, the location was easy, but I was punished brutally (zero points) on time. The bad British teeth and paper map made me think it was much earlier

            4) 8847 pts
3 yrs off - 252.8 km - Irritating because last night I made a final reservation for a trip to Krakow in May (retirement is going well) but still went with Warsaw.

            • Probably my best score. Pretty easy day, with a couple of lucky guesses.

              1) 9930 - Lucky guess on the city, just a few miles off on the neighborhood
              0 years - 3.1 km

              2) 9939
              1 year - 539 m

              3) 8969
2 years - 339 km - Guessed Mont St Michel, having never been to either place. Guessed recent and got lucky with the year.

              4) 9047
2 years - 252 km - Guessed Warsaw instead of Krakow. Not sure how anyone would know the difference there. Guy with the metallic jacket helped narrow down the year. Would have probably guessed 20 years earlier without him. But he could have just as easily been a time traveler as far as I know.

              5) 9963
0 years - 1.0 km - Dumb guess going with financial district instead of Mission St.

                • Pretty easy today. 46466.

Was 5 years off the Cuban Revolution and the street performers in Krakow. Guessed Warsaw for that. All others 0-2 years off and right on location. That map of the English Peninsula was very helpful.

3.4 km -- Couldn't remember the exact year of the explosion. Picked the wrong part of town. I thought the ports were to the west of the city and so I didn't look north of the city where the main ports are.

568.0 m -- I thought this was the French island that has been talked about here on the board at first, but looking closer figured it out and found the island. Tried to use the perspective of the land to get the location. I wasn't very successful.

252.7 km -- Picked Warsaw and wasn't very sure of the year. The younger people in the picture gave a definite 70's vibe, so I went with 76, but wasn't sure at all.

                    • This doesn't deserve its own thread so I'll mention here that Saint Michael's Mount (no. 3) reminded me of a fascinating historical/geographical oddity. The monastery in question is one of seven, constructed hundreds of years ago [before GPS!] that lie in a straight line from Ireland (Skellig Michael) to Israel.

...the seven monastic communities were perfectly aligned with the sunset on the day of the Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice. And six of the monasteries – all but the southernmost one – are named after St. Michael the Archangel. Even the monastery in Israel, the southernmost religious center, has a distinct connection to Michael the Archangel.

Including a perfect 10k on Beirut. If you scroll in enough, Le Chef is actually on the map. Not as familiar with the British coastline so picked the first castle jutting out along the southern coast. Joined the Warsaw club. Picked the Presidio instead of over by the docks to lose a couple hundred points on the last one.

                          • 47k. Was 10 years off on the Castro photo, because for some reason I was thinking the cuban revolution and missle crisis was closer in time to Vietnam. Other than that, I was over 9k on all the guesses. Guessed Warsaw because going to the capital city is just my go to unless there is a clear indicator otherwise. Is krakow the home of polka music or something?

It was the accordions for me. I've never heard of Czech polka. And I've learned to take the obvious stereotypical clue.
