ASU has a better campus situation with hotter co-eds and my guess is deeper pockets. I'd even question the tradition and academics claim. Utah is just now leaving behind the weak while ASU blazed the trail 40 years ago. If you mean traditions since 2004, then yes. Utah has more tradition.
We'll have to agree to disagree. I think ASU is like a community college on steroids. It has done almost nothing on the gridiron since Frank Kush. Its basketaball has sucked since WAC days. I think Tempe/Phoenix is Cleveland of the American West, but Cleveland has nicer neighborhoods. There are probably a lot more right wing crazies and wacky venomous ideas about race there than in Utah. Mountains. Weather. I could go on.

That is Utah. Also, mountains was probably your strongest argument.

You are definitely speaking to the PAC 10 party line with that argument. As you know, PAC fans have long derided ASU, Arizona, Wazzou, Oregon State (and to some extent Oregon) for paltry academics.

It would be interesting to see quantifiable data to verify how ASU stacks up against the U. Since both are state schools, admissions statistics would likely be similarly unimpressive. How about total national championships, research endowment, Sears Cup or similar rankings for total sports programs, etc.? I haven't looked into this so I have no idea how the schools compare.

Phoenix is an ugly place, though, second only to Las Vegas in the West. I think athletically, ASU is like more accomplished because all the PAC schools have fleshed out olympic programs whereas Utah does not, at least not yet. They certainly will over time, no doubt.

When I was a Senior in HS, I remember considering colleges and heading up to the 'Vo for Y Weekend. One of my friends was going to Tempe that very same weekend with his family. When we returned from our collective trips, I informed him that I had been accepted at BYU and found out over the course of the trip. He told me that he and his parents drove to ASU, paid a fee, and was accepted at the school.....all while standing in line in the administration building.

Per Wikipedia, Utah's endowment is bigger, 514M compared to 400M. But since they are both public schools their primary endowment is the state, and neither invested endowment is huge for the school size. This is common. But Utah has a med school and more developed graduate programs. The law school are comparable per US News.

ASU is the word's biggest party school. And yes, Phoenix yuck!

All nice figures, but I'd favor leveling the playing field somewhat if we could get Vontaze Burfict for a year or two.

                Good question.

Here's one answer which also places Duke of the West into the equation (LA opened the door).

Utah, two places above Tier 3, only outranks OSU in the new PAC 12. Ironically, that honor was previously held by ASU. Why all this rancor against ASU? Utah and ASU are very comparable academically, with ASU holding a slight edge.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Well, since 5 of the PAC's current 10 members apparently think the other 5 don't measure up academically, we should fit right in. If Colorado is allowed into the "academically acceptable" camp and Utah isn't, a perfectly even balance will continue. I love being in an egalitarian conference.

Does Utah recruit graduate students for its football team? That would be one crazy strategy.

UTAH IS TIER 1. There is not that much difference between Utah and BYU and Utah has to be more permissive to instaters and BYU has no graduate schools. (I'm not addressing this any more; there is plenty on the board about it. The proof is in the pudding; the Pac took us not BYU.)

I'm sure the data is out there. I invite you to find it and provide it to the recruits currently on the fence.
