Could the final record still be 8-4 even with a QB that is 2-4 plays better? Of course but if you could simulate the games with Tanner vs Taysom I think they win 2 and maybe 3 more games.

What plays is he better than taysom at besides pass plays? You think his handoffs are a lot better? Or maybe he just has very nice incompletions that lull the defense alseep for the next play? Seriously, if you dont mean Mangum does better in passing, tell me what it is he is doing better for 2-4 plays a game becasue I am missing that skill in comparing the two QBs to each other.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Perhaps he's better at reading defenses?

Yes, they occasionally make mistakes. But that doesn't at all refute the point I was making.

ANd that helps him to do what? Pass perhaps? Or call just the right audible? You think he is so much better at reading pre-snap defenses that he will get sufficient improvement on 2-4 non-pass plays a game to make a difference in the 8-4 record? Maybe. Not very likely, however.

                Simulate? Come on.

I wonder if that computer simulation would have predicted the 1st quarter of the Vegas bowl last year.

No idea. I was just guessing at an area where he could be better than Taysom. Maybe it gives him a better idea of where the pressure will be coming from so he can avoid 2-4 compromised plays/sacks/QB rushes. Maybe he rolls out of the pocket on those plays and either runs or finds an open receiver better. Lots of options here. It can't be as simple as "pass vs. run."

                    HFN comparing Taysom to Riley.

There is a sound football argument for Tanner. Ty wanted balance but worried about the O-line so he picked Taysom. He really had no way of knowing to what degree Taysom would struggle with the pass.

BYU had Jamaal to handle the ground game with solid backups in Squally, Algie, and Hall. We really didn't need a running QB. Since we had the ground game handled the balance would have come from a QB who could keep the defense honest with his arm. Taysom couldn't do that so the defenses were free to stack the box and blitz with virtual impunity. This of course led to a lot of pressure on the QB and at times stifled the ground game. Taysom was athletic enough to make them pay for this on occasions with his feet and Jamaal was good enough to make it seem like there wasn't an issue. Think how many more yards Jamaal would have had if the linebackers and safeties would have had to respect the pass. The offensive line certainly would have had an easier time. Also Taysom would have been a big weapon as a wildcat QB.

Love Taysom. No BYU player, except for maybe Luke Staley, left more of himself on the field. The warrior football player is one of the things that attracts me to the game. Taysom is a warrior.

College coaches make tons of mistakes and this staff is no different.

I don't know anyone that didn't think there were 4-5 circumstances where Taysom should have been benched. Not saying the entire year or even the entire game but to think he didn't get pulled once this year considering his results, was a big miss by the coaching staff, IMO.

Is it a stretch to say he had the worst season as a BYU QB of the past 20 years?

I think there's an argument to be made:

                          Sark
                          Feterik
                          Drew Miller
                          Doman
                          Berry
                          Beck
                          Hall
                          Heaps
                          Nelson

I can't think of a year where the QB passed for under 200 yards per game and threw 1 TD per game.

This isn't based on stats, but can you imagine anyone arguing for Matt Berry over Taysom Hill?

I've never been the biggest Taysom fan. I still think he's miles better than the 2003 carrousel of QBs that played.

Covey and Riley are fair comparisons though.

His pass rating of 116.9 is pathetic, but his running game makes up for a lot of that. In ESPN's QBR ranking that includes running, he's #55 in nation. SOS adjusted, compared to BYU schedules in the past, that probably is bumped up a little. We've had quite a few years in the past 20 where our QB was not among the 50 best in the country.
