Yep, having games every day in the last half of December sucks.

Unwatchable games between teams that shouldn't be in bowls, you speak the truth wapiti!

It's either that or a rebroadcast of the day's episode of Around the Horn. If they want to play a live football game instead that's fine by me.

        • Some teams really need the extra practice time that bowl games afford.

          • I am in favor of fewer bowls. I probably watched the entirety of 4 or 5 bowl games this season, and bits and pieces of 3 or 4 more. I have no interest in over half the bowls out there. Even more importantly, and where this affects me personally, is that with so many bowls being played, many of them need to be played earlier in the month. I would love to go see BYU play in a bowl game. I take the week between Christmas and New Year's off every single year. If BYU played in a bowl on Dec 28 or Dec 30, I would be there (unless it were in Detroit maybe). But there is no way I can (or really want) to travel to a bowl game on Dec 22 or 23.

Someone who donates more money than I should email Tom and tell him that his #1 priority for a new bowl tie-in is to have it Dec 27 or later.

I have that same week off too - and would love to have the game that week.

That said, how would you feel about a reduction in the number of bowl games overall resulting in BYU missing out on bowl games some years? As it is, if they are above .500 they'll be in a bowl. Reduce the number of bowls by getting rid of all of the bowls that are meaningless, and I'm afraid those of you wanting fewer bowls would get the unintended consequence of fewer bowls that your team of choice plays in, as well.

Personally - I prefer there to be more bowl games. I figure if I don't want to watch them, I can change the channel.

Along this same though process, you'll find that I don't complain about what's on the Home Shopping Network either, I just don't watch it.

I like watching BYU play in bowl games on TV. However:

The positive utility that I get from attending a bowl game is far, far greater in magnitude than the negative utility from missing out on watching BYU play in a bowl game on TV.

Furthermore, let's go ahead and make an assumption that, in today's environment, BYU would be in a bowl with 6 wins, and in an environment with fewer bowls, they would need 8 wins. If we look at the last 20 years of BYU football history, we get the following number of years with each result:

Less than 6 Wins (No Bowl in Either Scenario): 3 Years (15%)
6-7 Wins (Bowling in current, not in future): 5 Years (25%)
8+ Wins (Bowling in Either): 12 Years (60%)

So, if those trends continue, 25% of the next 20 years, I will lose some utility. But 60% of the time I will gain a far larger utility.

I'm no economist, but I think the conclusion is clear. Maybe Pelagius can write a Perl script that graphs out the whole utility maximization function or something.

I gotcha. I was missing the travel aspect of the equation and was focused on the watching on TV aspect. I agree - much more likely to attend in person if it is between Christmas and New Years. In all honesty, about the only pre-Christmas venue I would make is the Vegas Bowl due to its proximity.
