Anyone that suggests AAU status, in the age of the megaconferences, is going to be a major selection. criteria instantly lose credibility. That argument is only going to be used by the press (mostly to give them a talking point) and former PAC12 cork sniffers trying to retain a shred of status.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostAnyone who suggests that the Big 10 would consider San Diego State, instant loss of all credibility.

AAU (Amatuer Athletic Union) has more relavance in conference re-alignment than the AAU you're posting about. If Fresno State could bring in a hundred mill in TV revenue they would probably be a shoe-in for the Big10 or SEC. It's all about the dollars at this point. No one cares about whether or not one is AAU affiliated or a research institution.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostAAU does not mean automatic admission to the big 10, but it's a limiting factor, except Notre Dame, which is excellent at the academic things it does.

UM Ann Arbor's total revenue is $10.4 billion. The football program revenue is $37 million. And the athletic department lost a lot of money Those who actually stir the drink at these schools at most tolerate football. Totally apart from values, they care more about their brand than winning any national championship. Football does nothing but challenge the coveted aspects of their brand.

The Ivy League established a precedent of sports league affiliation associated with academic excellence.
to say nothing of the fact that Fresno being an academic backwater is one reason it could never deliver a hundred mil TV revenueWhen a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Well, the teams should have more than a days notice they are playing across the country. Not sure that’s a good comparison.Originally posted by tooblue View PostRemember this feel good story ...

Is the equipment of the football teams in the BIG also being sent by charter?

I'm not making a comparison, but rather thinking through the logistics of travel. As I said, I figured teams brought the equipment with them on the plane, but remembered those stories. As an aside, I did a Google search and only one NFL team has their own plane—the Patriots. So, USC is going to have its own plane but the Dallas Cowboys do not?Originally posted by Moliere View Post

The plane comment was flippant. I doubt USC buys a plane. They certainly could. They’d also use it a lot more than an NFL team since a college has two dozen or so sports and an NFL team had 8 or 9 away games.Originally posted by tooblue View Post

I can guarantee you that if a team like Alabama or aTm felt that buying a plane would get them a national championship or two, they’d have the money from boosters yesterday."Discipleship is not a spectator sport.
