Could be two or three hours difference for some schools getting to Denver / Boulder from the east.
They should add Iowa State, CU, Utah, Nevada/UNLV. You know, a continuous bridge.

The simple fact is that the LA schools need a bunch of close road games. They can't have every road trip a long flight and big time zone change except every other year playin at the other LA school. The Big 10 needs a pod of western schools, a division to play each other more intensively.
Even the NFL does that more or less. For the Seahawks nothing sucks as much as a road trip to Atlanta. They thank god they don't have to do that half the time.

I’m a little surprised Phoenix is not more coveted. I would guess it to be about double the size of Portland, with a much steeper growth curve. Granted neither UA or ASU bring much to the table with their current football status, but neither did UCLA
Phoeniz is about 2.5 times the size of Portland. But in terms of market size, Phoenix is 11 and Portland is only 10 behind at 21. The more intriguing aspect has to do with state legislature interference. If some claims are true--I haven't seen an actual news release--that the given state legislatures have said Oregon and OSU/ Washington and WSU must be package deals, then I could see the more attractive option being ASU, Arizona, Washington, WSU with the Oregon schools being on the outside.
I don’t think SU’s point about college football going down the drain is getting enough credit. CF is in trouble and is eating itself. It is becoming heavily regionalized with most of it focused in the South East (conference). They are tearing down any kind of established tradition and making any kind of rivalries irrelevant. It is losing a lot of appeal and uniqueness that set it apart from something like the nfl.
On a completely unrelated note (truly), it’s also fun to see he still struggles with sarcasm.

If that were truly a consideration, they would take Oregon/UW/Stanford (maybe Cal) over Utah and CU.
Did you read the USC press release? They basically said that they will make so much money off of this that transportation won't be an issue. IOW, chartered/private jets for everyone.
EDIT: I don't want to minimize the loss of regional rivalries. It is a darn shame.

It is a legit point. Not to mention CTE. College football is becoming less popular in some places (West coast for sure) and more popular in some places (SEC). The future is very uncertain.

I talked to a friend of mine who studies this college football situation, for those of you who care. He said that asking is Utah going to [fill in the blank] conference? is the wrong question.
What's happening is that the Big 10 and SEC are creating an NFL-style world outside the NCAA. The real question is whether your team makes the 35 team cut in the end.
By then, who cares about the Pac 12 or the Big 12, if college football really matters to you.
Utah may make the cut. BYU might. Probably some schools like Nebraska or Mississippi State could get booted.
But like I said, this is a buzz kill. The end of regional rivalries, tradition, the college atmosphere, everything that gave college football a competitive advantage over the NFL.
I won't be interested in an NFL minor league. No thanks. Gross. I can't believe schools like UW, UCLA, U of Michigan, want this. It's like they've partitioned DI sports and said, get the hence. I don't think they should license their brands to these NFL minor leagues.
The USA's most admired brands are our universities. And not because of college football. On the contrary. The real money also lies outside DI sports, that's for sure.
Yep. There's a lot of stone throwing. At the end of the day, we may both very well be on the outside looking in. The demise of the PAC can be viewed as poetic after Utah left without BYU. When you consider the XII is likely just a little farther down the road, I suppose we could call it the Circle of Life.

You are absolutely correct about this part. Much of the current college football audience will be lost to this new super division if they cut out so many of the schools. For pro football there is already the NFL. 90% of the fans of the schools left out would not care about NFL jr. If their team isn't in it, and therefore the money and ratings won't be what they think it will. it's a very shortsighted view.

And guess what. Nobody in the LA schools or certainty the rest of California will care if the LA schools aren't competitive.
They have other things to do. Like go to the beach, or watch the Rams.
