Yes, that is true, but I mostly meant that CB would then have a starting QB posting there instead of the guy who wore a ballcap while Detmer was winning the Heisman.

Agreed.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostThe college passing game is very different than the one of the 80s and 90s. There were a lot more intermediate and deep throws back in the day, which made for more INTs.
That said, 28 INTs is a ton for any era, especially for a QB that managed to win the Heisman.
I could be wrong on this, but I think defenses are a bit more complex now than then, so they account for that by doing shorter plays that happen fast and depend on someone breaking a tackle or making someone miss to pick up little chunks of yardage. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

That's part of it. Defenses are more complex, but so are the demands (and notoriety) of the quarterback position. And the play at QB has gotten significantly better as well, not to mention that running back is the easiest position to fill on the field (whereas QB is the toughest).Originally posted by The_Douger View PostAgreed.

College football transformed itself from a halfback's game into a quarterback's game. Just look at the Heisman winners through the years. There was one stretch in the 1950s where only one QB won it over a 14-year span -- and the QB that did win it was the only Heisman winner from a losing team (Paul Hornung). There was another 12-year stretch that ended with Doug Flutie in which a QB never won the Heisman. But since 2000, the Heisman has gone to a non-QB only twice.

True, but with Detmer you always felt like we had a shot. Down 24 at the start of the 4th Quarter? Right where we want them!Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThat's just nuts to me that he had that many and won the Heisman. Would someone here who knows more about football than I do explain what advantages a slim mobile offensive line has? Was the line of thinking that to better protect a QB who is running around like crazy, you need offensive lineman that can run around crazy too? I have almost no confidence that this O-line would be able to protect a pocket passer like Lark.

Slimmer offensive linemen tend to be better at run blocking since it's easier for them to pull and such. I didn't say it was working.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostHuh. BYU hasn't been any better at run blocking this year. I think Bronco is taking a bum rapp and for the matter so is Riley and any of the other players who are having over the top criticism heaped on them.
Bronco is fullfilling the job description he was given. How I react to his priority for football is number 5 is neither his fault, nor is my reaction my fault.
It is incumbent upon me to support how Sacrament meeting is run, who gives talks at general conference and how ward boundaries are laid out. It is NOT incumbent on me to support the edict Bronco has been given in running the BYU football program. Some may feel that responsibility, but their argument is hollow and basless if they try to say others have to do the same.
You can't have it both or serve two masters. Elite football with the idea that character people are those who are to be the face of the program. That isn't to say there isn't character in the folks who don't get recruited or are backups, but we look for cover boys to show the character and that is more important than how they play on the field.
If I don't like hearing the non football stuff which comes with this program, I can choose to not listen to post game shows, read articles, etc.
Those who make the decisions should pull the blue shades off and look at reality. WE won't be elite unless some parameters for the coach are changed and realize God is not going to intervene to show our way leads to BCS championships.Last edited by byu71; 10-14-2012, 10:11 PM.

So you think bronco's coaching style is not his own but is something that was imposed on him?

I think he's saying that the higher ups want it run a certain way and Bronco is doing that, but at the cost of a high end football program.
He's saying he'll blindly support sacrament meeting and church stuff because I'm assuming he has a testimony of the gospel, but he won't blindly support this because it's not church, it's a football team, and you have to put the time and effort in to be an elite program if that's what you're striving for. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.
