So what happens with Mahina? Sounds like the depth chart right now is probably Holt/Matthews/Wilson/Mahina, with Reynolds saying they'll probably only use 3. Too late to RS and move to DE?

The thing that I don't get with Matthews, is he doesn't seem like a TE to me. He's a tall possession receiver IMO. If I were going to make any moves, I'd strongly consider moving him to a WR spot.

I guess I'm okay with Mahina moving to DE as well, as I'm not as clear on what the pipeline is looking like there, because I do think he has enough talent that he needs to be on the field, somewhere.

Has Matthews put on any weight? Maybe he could get in that range of Harline where he's kind of a tweener WR/TE.

Dude was a freshman and yes he effed up a few visible times, but he was really starting to turn a corner toward the end and started to show and prove. We didn't see most of our great TE's on the field as freshmen with as little guidance as reportedly our guys got last year, so I think the razor blades can be set down for just a hot second...

I don't think people are "pitchfork" angry with Mahina. I think the bigger issue is the fact that there are currently 4 potentially really good prospects at TE right now, with not as much depth at DE.

IMO, I think Mahina and Holt both have the most upside as TEs who both block and catch. I think Wilson has potential to be a good receiver, but he doesn't have the frame IMO to be the blocker that Holt or Mahina do, and he doesn't quite have the speed to be limited to a WR. I think that is one reason why Mahina hasn't been switched.

Also, don't forget that Mike Muehlmann also was switched from TE to DE this offseason. I'm sure that is another factor why he's been kept at TE.

Yes. Also, the 3 guys who are apparently ahead of him on the depth chart right now are all in the same class. It's always possible that he vaults them in the future, but right now it seems a better allocation of talent to move him.

The only "yeah, but(s)..." that I would throw out there with Mahina is that, one, he does have a RS year available, so he could have an extra year than some of those who are also the same class, and if the coaches think that he may have a higher upside in terms of being a blocker/receiver than the other TEs, especially knowing how important the TE spot is to BYU QBs. His frame certainly appears to be more inline with what you would expect from any other TE with the exception of maybe Holt. So I would guess that the coaches probably have a little incentive to stick with him there.

Yeah, I never like to see any kid not make it at BYU, and I always think it is a bit of a downer when they don't... but I'm not shocked that he won't be suiting up for the Cougs.
