Bronco did say Chambers had more stringent conditions placed on him for getting his scholarship back and has been working to get it.

Sounds like maybe Phillips didn't take the threat seriously enough until he got notified he was losing his scholarship. He probably thought that cramming in a couple classes at the local juco the end of the summer (and missing fall camp) was going to get him back in. I guess not.

But Phillips missed the first day of spring drills due to academic issues, and he's seen limited action to this point.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall is reserving judgment on what role Phillips will play in the fall.

"Drew has a lot to show in terms of consistency," he said. "He's a potential playmaker. But life choices, day in and day out, are something he can work on."

Mendenhall answered questions about Phillips' status Friday.

"Drew is someone that struggled in his time here at BYU, just kind of in team policy and consistency," Mendenhall explained. "At the end of the spring semester, Drew was notified that he would not have his scholarship renewed, but that he'd have a great chance to come back if and when and how he did in his summer school classes to pay his own way for a year. Based on how that year went, he would then have a chance to rejoin us on aid. There was a letter sent to their home. Anytime we pull scholarships, which we don't do very often, there's a letter sent. I think that was the beginning of July or the end of June. That's when that was stated. That's probably as specific as I can get."

If nothing else, Bronco was consistent in saying Drew needed to work on consistency.

I know Howell is just rotating guys in, but impressive for Sampson to be in the mix for the starting spot there. Didn't he sit out all of last year? And didn't he actually play safety in JC? Bronco and Heaps were pretty high on P. Hadley through spring and summer. If Sampson beats him out then it will speak well about Sampson's ability.

Bronco on CB Joe Sampson: "Continues to emerge...knowledge of the game similar to Brian Logan...starting to warrant more attention."

I'd take a Brian Logan whose size doesn't officially qualify him to be part of the Lollipop Guild.
