How often was the nickel used the past two seasons? I wasn't insinuating a shift in the base defense, just that we'll see 5 DBs more frequently than has been Bronco's tendency since the switch to the 3-4.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI doubt it. I think we see BYU go to more nickel packages in obvious passing situations, but I am still quite convinced the 3-4 will be the predominant base defense. Mendenhall is not the type to change something as basic and fundamental as a base defense after spring ball.
I predict when the dust settles Sampson doesn't make it and the LBs are much better players than the defensive backfield.

I think they were planning to use it in 2009 with Shiloah Teo as the nickleback but then Shiloah was gently encouraged to go play someplace else. Last year I thought they went to it a bit with Carter Mees and/or Ned or Zed or Zeke Mendenhall. However, the point you make is valid and good that Mendenhall feels that he has enough capable safeties to make a nickel package work and that has been a rare thing for him at BYU. I do think he could have gone some nickel in 2006 with Corby Hodgkiss or Cole Miharya, but his linebackers were good enough. I think this upcoming crew of LBs will also be that good so while he may have the safeties he needs, especially if Sampson makes it, he still won't need to.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostHow often was the nickel used the past two seasons? I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Malosi Teo is back.
Picked up a few interesting deets about his exit and return. He's walking on with an aim of earning a schollie and will be coached by Bronco at DB w/ a possible eye to LB.
I'm not going to do back flips on this, but Malosi is a legit athlete with real-deal speed. I think the best hopes for him wld actually be to give us depth at OLB. But safety probably isn't a bad option either.
My only wish is that he would have embraced the move to DB sooner. But this is one more positive piece in the unprecedented "quality depth" we're starting to see.
And at the very least it's nice to have a repaired relationship with one member of the Teo Trifecta.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

UNLV, BYU, Hawaii, BYU. I am not nearly as excited as Ox. I wasn't excited about him to begin with and thought that we only offered to try and get Manti. When was the last time he played? 2006? I also assume he's getting the Oneill Chambers treatment from Bronco, no?Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostSo he never actually enrolled at Hawaii?"Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

But his athletic ability is pretty established. In camp last year he was the fastest of the running backs and looked great once he got the ball in his hands - his failing was that he had stone hands.
And actually based on what I was told he's on really good terms w Bronco as he left the program consultatively, asked permission, took appropriate steps.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

So it turns out the Jadon Wagner is coming back after all - walking away from a 6-figure Canadian contract to do it.
Have to respect that.......
Wagner's tweener DE/OLB flexibility is both an asset and a bit of a challenge for him in terms of locking down a spot in this D - but he played some very good football in the second half of last year and I think we'll see plenty of him this year and his experience will certainly be a plus, esp if Pendleton continues to be so gimpy.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

What's the point of that? I suppose the sweet canadian dollars will still be there next year, barring injury, but does he expect lots of playing time? Seems like he's slotted for back up duty at best.Originally posted by oxcoug View PostSo it turns out the Jadon Wagner is coming back after all - walking away from a 6-figure Canadian contract to do it.

From what I know about the Canadian contracts, especially for rookies, I don't believe it was a 6-figure contract.Originally posted by oxcoug View PostSo it turns out the Jadon Wagner is coming back after all - walking away from a 6-figure Canadian contract to do it.

Wasn't he drafted by Hamilton, which is on the complete opposite side of the country from BC, where he's from? Is Hamilton also maybe the Cincinnati Bengals of the CFL - if he goes back into the draft (I don't know how that works for them), maybe any other team would be preferable for him?Originally posted by falafel View PostWhat's the point of that?
