  • Good summary of Chad Lewis on 1320 today from someone on CB:

"talked about what happneed in the NFL during the last lockout .. blah blah blah. Talked about 9/11 when he and Itula Mili on seperate teams were sobbing together on the field when the two teams played eachother the week after 9/11 during the pregame honarary USA thing with the flag and stuff. Said it was a pretty magical moment.

Said Mahina and Holt are leading the charge and chompin at the bit to get better to be the next TE tandem. He also mentioned the other TE's too but said those two are leading the way.

Another thing, BYU is also going to honor all the TE's from the past like we did with the QB's last year. Every TE will be there. Said he's hoping the Broncos and Ravens have bye weeks so Coates and Pitta can join them.

Believes and Understands what Bronco's going through. Said he's never seen him more excited or happy like he has this spring to open a season. Heaps has unbelievable fundamentals. Kept rising up last year. Said we will go as far as Heaps will take us, says he's a gym rat, watches film, wants to break every record set by Young and Detmer. Says the coaches dont have to hover over him because of who he is. Really looking forward to this season. LOTS of praise for Heaps.

Broncos gift is tapping in to the hearts and minds of players. Said his influence on the D is going to be extremely significant."

    • Very nice!

What's going to happen with Richard Wilson? The guy came here with so much hype but I keep getting the feeling it's not going to happen for him.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Add CIA training to the list of Bronco's accomplishments. What can't he do?

I love Chad Lewis. Great at BYU and then it was a blast to watch him do so well in the NFL.

That being said, I think he is a cheerleader much like Greg Wrubell. Maybe one on one I would trust him to tell me the real scoop, but not in the paper or on 1320. I remember him saying when he played all the players obeyed the honor code. Credibility slipped a bit. If he had said even, all the players I know of lived it, I could buy that.

I have heard a differing opinion on Heaps. He has all the talent in the world, but is a bit stuck on himself. No problem, a lot of great QB's are. What I heard though was his work effort as far as staying in shape isn't that great. I heard his butt isn't the only thing that has gotten bigger.

I don't mean to rip Jake, just what I heard. What I heard could be coming from a 10% or less contingency and I don't mind someone on here with great sources calling bull shit. Chad in the public I dont consider a great source.

When I went to the scrimmage it looked to me like Jake was getting more powerful below the waist and maybe needs to concentrate a bit more above it.

That's not how I remember your, uh, evaluation.

                • HB bringing the hype of Joe Sampson -- let's hope he makes it to school

Bronco and Co. think Joe Sampson is an NFL player.
Sampson hasn't yet academically qualified, and if he does, BYU likely won't have him for more than a year.

I know there were some 3-3-5 looks in spring and Bronco has referenced it when talking about the safety position battles with Sorensen, Galea'i, Uale, and Hague. Throw Sampson in, mix in Bronco's love for Hadley, the natural ability of Everett, Eason's past productivity in limited reps, Johnson and Buckner...are we going to see 5 DBs s on the field often in a season when most everyone sees the LB corps as a real strength on this team?

I doubt it. I think we see BYU go to more nickel packages in obvious passing situations, but I am still quite convinced the 3-4 will be the predominant base defense. Mendenhall is not the type to change something as basic and fundamental as a base defense after spring ball.

I predict when the dust settles Sampson doesn't make it and the LBs are much better players than the defensive backfield.

                        History would agree with you.

This is what I predict happens as well. Don't get excited about J.C. guys until they do something on the field. I need to take my own advice sometimes lately (I am having a hard time not getting excited about Keith McGill at the U based on some conversations I have had) but I will stick to my theory that only 1 out of 3 J.C. guys do anything.

Also, from my understanding, the secondary is by far the biggest concern on the BYU D for 2011. Or so I have heard from credible sources. It makes sense though. BYU lost 3 out of 4 starters and the lone returning starter might have been the worst player on the defense last year.

This is a fair observation. I think the CBs will be a drop off from last year but I think they will still be adequate. Uale will be a bit better than last year. Sorenson will show glimpses but still make mistakes of youth.

However, I think the BYU defense will be much better. Especially if Pendleton and Fangupo stay healthy all year. The front 7 will be much better than last year, probably at every position save one DE, and even then I think the improvement margins will exceed the one position where BYU gets worse. The LBs will cover up for a very long list of sins.

Is that much different than any other pool of recruits?

Probably not. It is just J.C. guys are always hyped more than others and are expected play right away. The freshman are given a couple of years.
