Highlight of today's BYU practice was a 43-yard pass from Jake Heaps to Ross Apo. Drew Phillips also got more work than usual, looked good.

Nice to see Phillips out there. I've been disappointed by how much time he's missed this spring.

Bronco said Chambers will most likely play in the secondary. "I would like to coach him personally," Mendenhall said.

Bronco said Chambers has "not missed a thing yet" in trying to meet the criteria laid out to rejoin the team. "So it is quite a statement."

Few more BYU practice notes: Bronco said O'Neill Chambers is still in school can rejoin the program in January. Said OC might move to safety

Asked who helped themselves most in spring, Mendenhall mentioned M. Hague, S. Hadley, P. Hadley, S. Hafoka, R. Apo, A. Holt and M. Mathews.

Love, love, love this quote about Uona. I hadn't realized that we were getting such a smart, intense player here. In fact, I worried that we had a kid who was physically gifted but maybe not totally with the mental side of the game.

'"He loves football. He absolutely loves football. If you watch him on the sideline, how animated he is, any good play, no matter when it is in practice, he seems to see it all," Mendenhall said. "I bet he's been studying (football) from the time he was in kindergarten. He's really smart and very intuitive. He comes off the field and sees things that a lot of times as coaches, and we've had a lot of training, that we just barely see."

Kaveinga played on the scout team last fall at BYU, and he made a lasting impression on the coaches.

"The offensive staff, probably every week last year, told me, 'Man, wait until you see Uona and you get him on your side,' " Mendenhall said. "On all of the special teams, running down on kickoffs, I don't think anyone beat him down the entire year. Once he comes out here (on the field), it's like his playground. He loves it. It's fun to be around guys like that."'

I don't remember reading this anywhere here (maybe I missed it) but he was running with the 'backers and not with the linemen. Maybe they're hoping to use him more as a situational pass rusher from the edge. I would have concerns about him playing in space, though maybe he's catching on.

"The more mature choice would have been to come here to BYU. I made an immature choice to go to USC. But I learned a lot about football there and kind of discovered myself and where I was supposed to be and where I fit in. It's an honor to be here at BYU."

Am I the only one who finds Bronco's gushing over Uona's understanding of the game a bit alarming? I find it concerning that USC's staff could teach a back up so much about the game that he is able to give our coaching staff some pointers. Perhaps Uona is just a student of the game to that level, but I find it alarming that one could deduce that our staff is that far behind.

Saying that I am grateful Uona "matured" and came to the BYU.

Kaveinga and OL Marco Thorson got into it at Thursday's practice. It was a good hockey fight; Thorson ended up in his t-shirt, sans jersey.
