Probably not. I know certain guys came to BYU as safeties (Bills, Franscisco, Rich, Jray, etc.), but maybe the majority are converted DB's. I don't know. I just figured people were going to say "well he played safety in HS" about Hague, but my main point was that even for guys who played the position in HS it's still tough to pick up in college, so I was curious how far behind he'd be switching at this point. Sizzle's post was the type of response I was looking for.Originally posted by Surfah View PostIs that true? It very well may be, but it seems to me (just thinking off the top of my head) that many safeties are players converted from other positions. So Russell...what do you love about music? I concur with Sizzle. His biggest problem will be being compared unfairly to Rich.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostProbably not. Will Hine be back in time for spring ball? Or is he getting back this summer? I'm excited to see what he can do, since he is the caliber of athlete that BYU rarely lands out of HS. If he's back to 90% of his pre-mission speed by the time the season starts, I could see him providing a nice change of pace to JJ or Q. If he's not close to being ready (and this is certainly more likely) I hope he redshirts and spends a year getting back in shape.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostHarmon with a list of who is coming back and who is leaving in regards to missions:
Coming:
Solomone Kafu
Iona Pritchard
Michael Alisa
Spencer Hadley
Daniel Sorenson
Justin Sorenson
Ian Dulan
Brock Stringham
Kaneakua Friel
Kevan Bills
Cameron Comer
Rex Morgan
Adam Hine
Going:
AJ Moore
Jordan Black
Algernon Brown (although I am almost positive he is going to Utah St. upon his return)
The rest are all walk-ons

Returns in June, I expect him to redshirt next year. There will be no reps for him. Quezada should be more prepared to carry more of the load and the other loadbearers are back in Kariya and JJ. Throw in a few carries for Drew Philips and there is no reason to waste a year of elgibility to watch a physically unprepared RM get hurt. If he is legit, he will really get an opportunity to contribute a lot starting as a RS freshman.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostWill Hine be back in time for spring ball? I forgot about Phillips. Hopefully he'll provide the home-run ability that we don't get from JJ/Q. That's my biggest concern, really (though I am really stoked for Hines). We need a guy who, even if he's only getting 6-8 carries, is a threat to take it to the house if he gets in open space. Neither JJ or Q is that threat. And yes, if Hines returns in June, there's no way he'll be ready for the season. Perfect opportunity to redshirt.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostReturns in June, I expect him to redshirt next year. There will be no reps for him. I don't think Hines is a homerun threat. Good athlete and if he develops his basic skill set sounds to me like a Curtis Brown type of runner - very good at many things but not real good at one thing. The size to run with occasional power, the athleticism to make the first guy miss and the speed to outrun LBs but not anything that will scream out this guy can play at the next level.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostI forgot about Phillips. I believe Hine comes back in August and will most definitely redshirt this year to get back into the swing of things but he is way more gifted athletically than Curtis Brown. Curtis made up for his short comings with heart but Hine dominated in high school and was all everything racking up crazy stats with opposing defenses targeting him every week. I think he will be a beast and will be very similar to Phillips in what he brings to the field.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI don't think Hines is a homerun threat. I have to disagree on that. Hine is nowhere near as fast as Phillips and none of his video shows a guy with the same lateral quicks as Phillips either.
I want to believe in Hine but all the video shows me guy who (a) has good but not exceptional speed and (b) runs with a very high center of gravity. I see little video showing him being effective between the tackles (always a problem with high-center guys).
I understand the hype about his athleticism, but playing running back only provides a limited number of situations where high jumping and long jumping are relevant.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Hine ultimately move to WR.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī

Hine is an exceptional athlete. He's obviously not as quick as Drew Phillips...but being that Drew is the fastest kid on the team (Yes, faster than Robbie Buckner)....well yeah....anyway...the best comparison to Adam Hine imo is Jamal Willis. He has exceptional vision, able to hit the outside or run between the tackles, and is a very good receiving out of the backfield. The kid was THE ONLY good player on his team his Senior year and was forced to play Quarterback. It was amazing to see what he did seeing that Snow Canyon had no other weapons, yet time and again, in spite of opposing defenses gameplanning exclusively for him and no one else...he was still able to wreak havoc out there.
I watched him in person 3 different times and everytime came away impressed. If anything he's going to be another solid weapon.
He's 100% going to redshirt for the 2011 and then will look to get some PT behind Quezada in 2012 when JJ and Kariya are gone. AJ Moore is going to struggle at BYU. The kid is slower than JJ and struggled mightily while on the Scout Team to hold onto the football.Last edited by EdmondDantes; 02-01-2011, 12:56 PM.

I think Wrubell mentioned this on twitter a while ago. He also talked about Matthews moving back to receiver.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostAccording to his dad, Mike Muehlman has switched to Defensive End.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Although you don't longjump or highjump on the football field, those events indicate fast twitch muscles and explosiveness. Hine's field event numbers lead me to believe he will be a fantastic athlete. You can't do what he does in track without being one. That said, he needs to find his place on the football field. He could be a rb, receiver, safety, corner, etc. I hope the coaches find where he fits best during a redshirt year and then unleashes him on our foes.
I knew a 7'2" high-jumper in HS. The guy was 6-3 and could hit is forehead on the rim. His basketball skills were limited but he still played D-1 ball because his ability to run and jump were exceptional. His first step was amazing and he was a long strider who could get to the rim with one bounce. That's how I envision Hine's athleticism.
I forgot to mention. Hine's high-jump numbers get all the press but his javelin performances are equally impressive and involve another, but apparently equally explosive, set of muscles. Unfortunately, his 100m time's never impressed me.Last edited by KillerDog; 02-01-2011, 01:25 PM.

I think everyone believes Hine is a terrific athlete. But how fast is he? That seems to be the question. You can have vertical/explosiveness but not necessarily have homerun speed. I think that's what Goat is saying. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I think that Willis is probably a good comp in terms of body type and that they both tend to run high - but the one difference I can see (and again, I cld be wrong, I just haven't seen anything in his video showing that I am) is that Willis, although he was long and ran high, had the lower-body agility to actually GET low. There are great examples of that in his breakthrough game against SDSU as a frosh where he drops his butt within 1-2 feet of the ground in spite of having a 6'3 frame.
I haven't seen any video from Hine suggesting he's got that kind of lower body agility but maybe I've just watched the wrong video.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī
