I agree Hine isn't a homerun or breakaway threat everytime he touches the ball. Curtis Brown and Harvey Unga weren't known for their speed either and yet both broke BYU rushing records.

Not saying Hine will break any records, but Hine is a good enough athlete to play a significant part in BYU's offense.

Based on his 100m time, he is either not that fast or doesn't know how to get out of the blocks. Based on his long-jump distance, he is pretty damn fast.

He ran an 11.14 his junior year. That's pretty fast. To compare, Luke Staley's fastest I've been able to find is 11.03. Drew Phillips has a 10.90.

        • Remember the guy from Washington that supposedly ran sub 11 100m and then came to school and was to slow to play linebacker?

Jerry Bruner. Transferred to Washinton State and was also a wash out there.

            • I think Adam Hine will be an impact player at BYU. Name another 4 star RB BYU that committed to BYU? I can't. Now we all know the star system isn't fool proof but it does tell us that those that have seen him play and can evaluate talent projected him pretty high. He committed early as a Junior and never waivered so I don't think any other schools really tried to get him to turn. The great thing about Adam is that he can come in and grow within the system rather then be expected to step up and play immediately.

He was rated higher then both Phillips and Q coming out of school. Now again, that doesn't mean much as we know Q is going to be a player and we hope Phillips will live up to his hype but with regards to Adam, I don't understand why some of you are not that excited about him. It will be interesting to see if his body type has changed at all while on his mission.

Who's not excited to have him? I think everyone is excited to have him. Some just don't think he's that next-level BYU RB. I have no idea -- never seen him.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I'm excited about him as an athlete. I just don't know that I'm super excited about him as a RB. Stars don't do a lot for me. I generally get a lot more excited about what I can see on film. What I see of Adam's film is him running outside the tackles and getting the corner - he was fast enough to do that in high school. He won't be fast enough to do that consistently in college. And if he's not fast enough to get the corner consistently in college, he needs have the right stuff to run low and make tough yards out of tight spaces. I didn't see video showing him doing that.

But he might have done it all year and they just didn't show it in the video I watched. I hope he's the greatest thing ever. The fact that he is skinny and runs upright suggests to me that he's not going to be the best ever at running back and that he might be a better fit at WR or safety.

But again - I hope I'm wrong. I hope he destroys every rushing record at BYU.

                  • Interesting tidbits from Darnell Dickson:

"Finally, here's a list of players from the 2010 roster who are planning on serving LDS missions. The names you don't recognize are walk-ons: Jordan Black (OL), Algernon Brown (RB), Chris Copier (TE), Cole Jones (OL), Dallin McEwen (QB), AJ Moore (RB) and Luke Nelson (WR)."

No Rowley. No Tuiloma. Both were expected to go on missions as of two months ago. Heaps and Jimmer having their dreaded effect. Fans like MG and Napper applaud openly. I celebrate privately.

                    And this, I like:

"Another tidbit from Mendenhall is that after the initial struggle of putting together an independant schedule for 2011, the requests and discussion for games has exploded. He said Tom Holmoe fields calls practically every day from schools wanting to talk about future games."

I wonder what that's about. It could be that opposing teams figure they can capitalize by playing us while we're down, but if they're paying attention they know it's not likely to be a trend. Perhaps it's actually about the ESPN contract?

And here's another "hurray for no missions!", perhaps tempered a bit by the potential for such surprises to be bad for recruiting/team composition planning.

Ah hah yes - I'd amend to "fans like MG, Napper and Woot."

BTW, did Corey Edwards run away from home?

                          • Wait, Chambers is moving to safety, too?

Moving these guys with little time left to learn the position just seems kind of desperate to me. Is the coaching staff serious about him playing there? Or is this one of those "let's see if you're willing to do what the team asks" sort of tests?

I only like it if it's not just teams calling Tom solely to do 2-1's or one and dones. That's not rad.

I see a couple of possibilities in the OC move to safety:

                                1. "No, you can't have your old job back - and we'd prefer you weren't a distraction to the younger guys who might still think of you as the guy ahead of them on the depth chart"

                                2. We lack depth at safety. OC has a hitters mentality. He was a good safety in high school. He's been around the program long enough that if anyone can absorb the new position quickly it's probably him.

But I seriously doubt he provides anything more than depth on that side of the ball.

BTW, he's apparently excited about the move. Too bad he's not just a little bit faster, he's actually got just the right build for a safety.
