Let me reiterate that I am never a fan of kids not sticking at BYU for whatever reason. I'd love all kids who want to come here to be successful, go on to NFL careers, get their degree and have great lives. I especially hope that non-members have positive interactions as well (why there is a no-mo complex, I'm not sure, but I think to some degree, most of us as mo-mos have it).
Having said that, while I think academic issues have been part of the requirements to being reinstated, I'm also sure that there were other stipulations tied to those requirements. Drew may be 100% academically eligible, but if he didn't live up to the other commitments he made, I could see Bronco pulling a scholarship there. Not saying right or wrong, just saying I could see Bronco doing that.
It also seems like Phillips has had issues since he arrived on campus. Had issues getting cleared to play. Had issues in school that caused him to need to put in extra work during the summer to get eligible. Speaking 100% in generalities here, but kids who typically can't put in the required work in the classroom to make it aren't typically the type of kids I want to be relying on to win football games on Saturday. They have a lot of resources available to them to get good grades.
I'll be patient with this situation as I don't want to speculate any more than I had, but IMO, the staff has built up a lot of good will in knowing their players and in terms of winning games.

Here is what I was told. Phillips and Gaines were out of control from day 1. They lied about attending class to go snowboarding and hang out with friends. They missed numerous workouts and never took being a D-1 athlete serious. Phillips was way behind in hsi classes and had to stay through the summer to make them up.
Bronco told both Kori Gaines and Drew Phillips to go home and that they would not be allowed back at least until school started because they were not responsible enough to live on their own through the summer. They both assumed they would be allowed back and that not attending the start of fall camp was their punishment.
Then Bronco went to Kori Gaines and said he needed to learn the value of a free education and told him he would have to pay his own way this year. His parents agreed with Bronco they were 100% on board and made Kori get a job through the summer to earn some money.
This next part has not been 100% confirmed but a player told me that Bronco decided it was not worth the hassle of dealing with these two and thought since Gaines had already committed to paying his own way and taking the steps if he split them up maybe he could save one of them.
So he let Drew Phillips know he wouldn't be allowed back.

Hmm in that case, the phillips should be pissed. That hardly seems fair.

I can see how, from their point of view, they feel they've been lied to.

It sounds like it would fit with what Phillips brother was stating, and would seem to be in line with something that Bronco would do.
Looking back at mistakes that happened in Broncos first few years, I'd say Bronco probably learned a lesson that the trouble isn't usually having one player who gets into trouble. It's having a few players who are friends that get into trouble together. And if he decided that Drew and Kori couldn't co-exist at BYU and stay out of trouble, so be it.

Depends on exactly what stipulations were stated when he was sent home, but I could definitely see why the family would be mad. I would be too.
On the other hand, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is what is best for the football team/University, which is what Bronco ultimately has to live with.

And what was said or not said, promised or not promised, is conjecture. The known fact is that Phillips has been on thin ice from the day he arrived on campus. The fact that he was at some community college taking classes this summer to get technically eligible doesn't by itself mean that Bronco should immediately welcome him back to the team, in my mind.

Has somebody said that Phillips won't be allowed back with the team? So far, I'll I've heard is that Drew's scholarship has been pulled, which would be the same that you're reporting happened with Gaines.

Right. I think he can always be on the team, but he's being punished for being a dipshit at the moment. His tweet, now evaporated, which said, "Well BYU, it was fun while it lasted..." is somewhat telling, but I can't imagine he'll get away with bouncing without a meeting with the Zen master, first. Not Phil Jackson. The Mormon one. Who doesn't smile. Not LaVell.

Also today: Joe Sampson played ahead of Preston Hadley at first-string boundary cornerback.
I know Howell is just rotating guys in, but impressive for Sampson to be in the mix for the starting spot there. Didn't he sit out all of last year? And didn't he actually play safety in JC? Bronco and Heaps were pretty high on P. Hadley through spring and summer. If Sampson beats him out then it will speak well about Sampson's ability.

Drew's scholarhip was pulled after spring for policy consistency says BM. Has struggled with some challenges
No idea what that means.
