They have a 12-1 team in a top 10 market but still can't fill their 40,000 seat stadium.

Big 12 games have no problem getting on TV in Houston right now. Adding UH doesn't add anything to that. If you had a B12 channel it would be available in every cable/satellite home in Houston whether UH is in the Big 12 or not. There are too many Texas fans there for that not to happen.

It would help, but UH is just not a good school. It's academics are lower than average. It's in the third Ward, which is a slummy part of town. It's a commuter school and one that people go to if they don't get into a better option.

Take the UofU, move it into the center of Rose Park, knock it's academics down a couple notches, move their Urban Meyer glory years back to the 80s, move the 49ers into downtown SLC, add BYU to the SEC and USU to the PAC12 and you basically have a similar situation.

Ok, I get what you mean. It's just that in the broadcast/cable context, that distinction of having it to yourself or sharing with another league doesn't really matter. TV channels get paid based on how many households can get the channel whether anyone watches or not. The B12 isn't hindered in the least in Houston whether there is also an SEC team there or not. Now under the old world broadcast TV model of ratings being king, then it would matter more. The thing is, cable channels make so much more money from per subscriber fees that whatever ad revenue comes in is very minor. Now this may change eventually because of cord cutters.

But at least when they added TCU, A&M had just left, so they were replacing a Texas team rather than adding yet another one.

Correct me if I am wrong but what the Big 12 is proposing to do is take the top two teams and play them again at a neutral site and call it the Big 12 championship. This year that would have taken OU and OSU (the top two Big 12 teams) and put them in Cowboys Stadium to play again after they had already played the week before. I don't think they have much of a case to get their championship game.

Yes, but still not a very compelling reason in my view. Very shortsighted. Same with West Virginia. They add nothing in terms of recruiting or tv sets. I really think the conferences think that they can get someone and stamp their sticker on it and it will have cachet immediately. It worked with the Utes, that's why they are so damn proud of their Pac-12 stickers.

I'm not sure I'd say the big12 owns the Houston market. They probably share it 50/50 with the SEC. UT and aTm are the bigger players here but after that you have LSU as the next biggest. UH is probably after that along with Baylor. Tech and TCU are fairly non existent here...in fact Oklahoma might be bigger in Houston than them.

The problem UH has, that other commuter schools like Utah don't have, is that the Texans and NFL reign supreme in the city.

I have never heard of those NFL teams.

They are professional sports teams that have won multiple championships and that have been eating eggs on burgers since the 1950s.
