Houston already did that in the SWC under HC Bill Yeoman and after - UH was respectable up through 1990. In the SWC, Houston won the conference four times and had some good win streaks against Texas. Even with that success, I'm not sure UH had a large, dedicated fan base. After 1990, UH struggled and the demise of the SWC relegated them to their current place in college football.
