Does Big 12 have an eye on expansion?

The Big 12 is taking a two-pronged approach, first trying to get the divisional concept dumped so it may stage a conference championship game without needing 12 teams. If that fails, it might decide to poach two more teams from other conferences as long as that expands its footprint and recruiting base. Look for both UCF and USF being targeted for courting.

    • If South Florida gets in over us, it will be nothing short of ridiculous.

          They've already been "in" before.

          • Thanks for the link. I was wondering what real clear sports would have to say on the matter.

What I like about them is not only that they discuss sports, but they are also very clear. Just keeping it real.

I don't see how they bring more money than us, and they weren't deserving of being in the first time.

I can't wait to see what the unintended consequences are.

They're talking about 4 year scholarships? Sounds great for the athletes, but if there's a kid who just doesn't ever develop into whatever the coaches saw in him, the school is stuck!

I'm also curious to see what the money does to a kid's concern about playing time. Does Peoples leave for Idaho if he isn't going to get paid there? What about Olsen transferring back to SUU, etc.? Over time a number of players have decided to leave for a lesser team in order to increase their playing time. How many of those players still go if they know that the best they'll get at their new school is a basic scholarship compared to what they're getting at BYU or a P5 school? These are spots that will be filled for 4 years by players who will never contribute. Don't talk to them about the value of an education. They don't care if a Stanford scholarship is worth $100,000 and one from BYU is only worth $50,000. They don't ever see that money anyway. What they care about is the $3K that gets put in their pocket...and will no longer be put in their pocket if they leave to a non P5 school. How long will it be until they decide to increase the number of scholarships a school can give out?

There's that, and then it makes me wonder if they'll regulate that 3000 dollars or if each conference can do different things, or if an independent team like BYU can offer more than the PAC does, and things like that. Can you cut guys if they suck? I know Bronco told a couple players to keep it moving at the end of the year, and they were hoping to come back and complete their senior years. Dave Rose has done a bit of this as well. So, it's a whole new can of worms. I don't like it.

                    • There is an avid Oklahoma fan in the office. He is like the Oklahoma fans I talked to when we beat them in Dallas.

He was very congratulatory on our win and had no excuses to offer, just that we were the better team and beat them.

He is constantly telling me he wants us in the BIG12, mainly because he would like to see Oklahoma play only a few miles away.

Today I told him he needs to get the BIG12 to give us an invite. He responded by saying perhaps if you guys didn't think you were the ND of the west and wouldn't make so many demands they would.

He said the word among his friends who are Oklahoma fans is they would love to have us in the conference if we didn't think we should be treated like Texas.

I said, we will never play on Sunday. His response was, "we don't play conference games on Sunday".

I did tell him though to keep hope alive. I think we have about a 20% shot of eventually getting into the BIG12. That's because napper thinks we are getting in.

Any updates, '71? Has your friend changed his mind re: BYU acting like Texas?

                                I will go see.

Edit: I had him come read your post. He said, "people who claim your fans are pricks I guess are right". His message for you was to go F yourself.

I defended you and told him I was appalled he took that attitude.
