Sounds like a false choice to me: either the pharisee route or anything goes.

You were the one to say there was no wiggle room. I was pointing out that sounds an awful lot like the Pharisees.

I have similar doubts. The two biggest questions that are asked in conference expansion is 1) When? and 2) How much $?. TV contracts factor directly into how much revenue will be received. TV partners are consulted before a conference even begins discussions with potential new members.

I understand that the Big 12 and BYU may not have been able to reach an agreement with regards to TV exposure. What I don't buy for a second is that the topic didn't come up...it would have been the first thing discussed after "When can I join".

Perhaps the conversation ended when BYU asked: "What kind of TV exposure can we expect?". And the answer was: "You get the same deal as all members get in the Big 12. TV exposure is determined by our TV partners which is largely based on the sucess of the program and the audience it can bring in. You start losing in the Big 12 and you'll be on TV as often as Baylor or Kansas. You start winning and you'll be on prime time".

BYU has guarantees with ESPN that they will never have in writing with the Big 12.

Your right, people interpret things differently. But maybe they're just rationalizing. It seems that tradition and culture become more important than keeping the commandments.
Sounds like the only people in trouble are those taking tickets and selling hotdogs on the sabbath. Spectators aren't working.

            What about the players?

They're playing, not working. It's even in their name...players.

The coaches might have an issue, though.

                  Same for the refs.

Of course, none of these people would be working if not for the players.

In any case, if playing is your vocation, then playing is working.

An argument can be made that the players are not working either. From my limited knowledge of Halakha (Jewish law) all that is needed is a Rabbi to declare that the stadium is a residence. Besides, those taking tickets greeting fans and selling serving food are performing a civic duty related to people's safety and nourishment.

Playing indoors or at night would be difficult since no one could turn on the lights.

The refrees are preforming a civic duty related to the safety of the players involved. Much like a policeman or a fireman.

The players are student-athletes not professional athetes. It is not their vocation as they are students preforming a service for their school. They just have different gifts and abilities. One student may be on full-scholarship for being gifted at playing the violin or dance and may even utliize that gift on the Sabbath. Students on full athletic scholarship simply have a different gift.

They are simply exercising their gifts and abilities, its not working - the student athletics are not even employed by the university.

When I attend church, the lights are always on. I just hope someone repents for flipping the switch.

OTOH, the scholarship can be considered as their compensation for playing.

The lights were either turned on Friday before sunset, or were turned on by a timer.

I have always wondered if it is against the sabbath to study on Sunday. Probably not.

Unless you have a scholarship of course. Because then you are being paid to study.
