    • I don't think saying Utah basketball is a tier below Kansas is that far off base.

      • Utah gets some respect in basketball. Now that we have established that they get respect, let's put them in a tier. Basketball has a few tiers and Utah is only one tier below Kansas in a fantasy land:

        Top Programs All-Time:
        UCLA, Kansas etc.

        Current Consistent National Programs:
        Duke, North Carolina etc.

        Onetime Consistent National Programs:
        Georgetown, Indiana etc.

Regional Powers that have had National Prominence:
Utah (that's as generous as I can be)

        ...

Guys who sometimes win in conference:
        BYU etc.

Does the coach next door coach at OU and would they be in a position to know for sure?

C'mon, that's pretty generous to Utah to say a tier below Kansas.

Wait, are you telling me it isn't about academics?

I was severely mauled by that dog and he had to get rid of it (he didn't put it down; gave it to someone who needed a mean guard dog; it was from Brazil, bred by German refugees). Upwards of 40 stitches. True story.

It depends on how big a tier is. If a tier is 150 teams, then Kansas is probably only a tier above. If a tier is 25 teams, Kansas is probably 7or 8 tiers above Utah.

By the time I was a freshman in 1995, the average ACT was a 27 and GPA was a 3.8, a far cry from where it was prior to the mid to late 80s. Was there a mini baby boom that took place in the early to late 70s that caused this, or was BYU's success in athletics part of what happened.
You're off by about a decade. BYU's admission standards increased dramaticly in the mid-1980s with a demographic bubble of new college-aged kids in the church. It ties directly to the baby-boom the rest of the Western world saw, with a second boom beginning when the first LDS boomers had kids who turned 18.

My sister was working for BYUs admissions office at the time (as a real decision-making full-time employee, not as a student), and the increase in the number of applicants - and the quality of the applicants ultimately accepted - initially caught them by surprise. 1984 was the year when the big jump in numbers hit. The numbers got bigger from there, as more and more boomer kids applied, but that's when it started, and there was a big jump in the quality of 1984 freshman. If you compare the admissions numbers of mid-eighties freshmen to those from the mid-seventies there is a huge change (for the better). Compare the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties, and the improvement is pretty small.

LOL! I didn't want to try and define some of the marginal programs.

All I know for certain is that under the strongest argument, Utah is in the group of schools with a national championship and Kansas is in the group with multiple. The gap is further widened by history as well as how recently they have won the national titles.

                              Fixed that for you.

Well, then we have something in common. No stitches, though. There wasn't enough left.

Either way I'm hardly going to let one of those incessantly-yapping affluent pipsqueak dogs chase me out of a thread. lol.
