Stanford has a great athletics tradition...that wasn't my point. Furthermore, the question isn't BYU versus Stanford, but I understand the Ute compulsion to use BYU as a measuring stick. It's not your fault; it's Pavlovian (bless your heart).

Notwithstanding their sports tradition, their world-class academics, and their sizeable endowment, I still do not believe they bring added value to the B10 in dollars and cents.

Edit (I just read the link you shared): so you're relying on the hearsay from a USC blogger to solidify your position. That's cute.

They are worth it even if they are slightly dilutive in football.

From a reputation perspective, certainly. From a market value perspective, I'm still skeptical. How many Stanford fans do you know? How many Stanford fans do you know who aren't alumni? How many Stanford alumni do you know who are active fans?

Outside of the Bay Area, are people watching Stanford games for Stanford? Anecdotally (and I've lived a lot of places in this country), I'm not seeing it.

Now, of all the P5 conferences, the B10 is the one who seems most likely to look the other way at market value in favor of non-monetary factors.

I live in SoCal and I run into Stanford fans quite a bit, but these moves are not being made because of fan support. Their football is good enough or its close enough because everything else is an overwhelming benefit.

So Stanford is different from all other schools in that they make money other than in football and men's hoops? Enough money and support to dilute conference member profit sharing? I think these moves have to be made because of fan support. Because that's where the money is at. We can say this isn't about money, but that's clearly not correct (cue: SU)

Certainly a mixed bag, but looking at their records over the years, the historical prowess of the Cardinal football team seems to be a myth. In fact, the last ten years have easily been their best decadal performance (notwithstanding a total of 11 wins the last three seasons).

Yes, Stanford is different than almost all other schools. If the B1G university presidents have any say left, they will choose Stanford.

We all know the B1G wants ND first and foremost. Stanford is one of the schools ND will not take off their schedule (along with USC and Navy). Adding them sweetens the pot a little for ND. No team left moves the needle in terms of TV market, but there are strategic reasons to add Stanford and I don't believe that they will be dilutive enough to matter, but that is just a guess. My guess is that it will be It will be Stanford and ND or it will be nobody.

Crazy that they don't have Utah's national championship on there.

Stanford football was a national power back when Pop Warner was coaching, but so was Army and they aren't on anyone's expansion list. In fact, Stanford football is most famous for a game they lost.

But I also agree with everyone that the fact their overall athletic dept is the best in the country and the fact that the school is Stanford make them perhaps the most attractive non-ND candidate immediately available.

It may be. Just not from a dollars and cents perspective, except maybe as a ND package deal.

I have a friend who is a huge USC and BYU fan. He follows the conferences closely. (Happens to live in Alpine like Lebowski.) A gamer in every way.

He's said to me several times he can't understand why the B1G didn't grab Stanford instead of UCLA.
