The PAC 10 expansion groundswell

Would you take Clemson/Miami over Washington/Oregon? Tough to say. If not for the obvious choice of Utah, the sky would be the limit!

When looking at the sports landscape from a financial rather than a geographic standpoint, which four teams make the most sense? Obviously Oregon with its Nike backing and television success. But who else? I have to admit I don't follow the Pac 12 other than to know that Utah rebounded like a drunken prostitute after BYU stuck them last September. So which three among the following teams from the Pac 10 and recent Big 12 finalists make the most sense for expansion financially?

• Arizona
• Arizona St
• Cal
• Stanford
• Washington
• Colorado
• Utah
• Boise St
• Colorado St
• Memphis
• Air Force
• Southern Florida
• UNLV
• Anyone else?

Based on my limited knowledge, Arizon (primarily because of BB in the Big 12) Arizona St, and Washington join Oregon in making the most financial sense. Of course, from the Big 10 point of view, I could see them inviting Cal and Stanford to secure a foothold in all of California and have control of five of the top six television markets. So perhaps I should have eliminated those two.

In that case you take the Arizona and Washington markets (Phoenix and Seattle are 11 and 12) and say goodbye to Oregon and its liberal politics that don't really fit with the Big 12. In the meantime Oregon, OSU, Stanford, and Cal are absorbed by the Big 10

Trying to decide how much money I would donate to charity for an official letter from the P12/B12/ACC commissioners to go out saying that, for any team to be considered as a candidate in expansion, their stadium must have green turf. Any teams with turf which has a primary color if anything other than green will not be considered for inclusion in P5 conference expansion. If a team currently has a different color turf and can show that A) that they have started the process of changing the turf to green and B) they have spent at least 50% of the contract price towards changing it, they can submit the invoices and check stubs as proof that they qualify for consideration.

I wouldn’t donate $5000 for that letter to officially go out from these conferences, but I would pay more than $1000.

FIFY. OSU is not an AAU member. That could be a no go for B1G.

Edit: The B1G should invite UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley (Cal), UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara (all AAU members) to keep the UC family together with UCLA. Not good to split up families.

First, the Big10 is patient - they have no need to rush.

Second, if they did want to rush, that $100 million might equate to one year's revenue per team under whatever new TV contracts they sign, so it might not be as big a deterrent as you might think.

But they'll always have that memorable loss in the Rose Bowl. You are right though, when everyone accepts t that this game is as slanted as a sheer cliff the easier it is to enjoy. Kinda like Vegas.

Leaving aside the fact that Utah made a decision that was in their best interest in 2010, that they actively tried to destroy BYU's reputation to avoid inclusion in subsequent rounds of expansion to ensure market share, and the nonstop rubbing it in our faces by their fan base... leaving all of that out of the equation, the Big-XII goes after the best brands that are available that will help the conference. This is strictly a business decision and nothing more. Right now that is OU, UW, ASU, and Arizona. We also need to see if the ACC gets blown up and maybe the conference gets a chance at VaTech, Pitt, Miami, or NC State. These brands are all better than Colorado and Utah. If it gets to a point where all the other options aren't available, we look at them. Long term conference viability is the most important thing now.

Hell yeah, and toss in Louisville as well. Miami will be picked up by the SEC.

A: Larry isn’t dumb. He is a terrific negotiator who sees the angles just fine. He negotiated extremely well — for himself, for example. I think he is selfish, arrogant and insecure. He was loathed by the underlings at the Pac-12 office. He is a Harvard-educated tennis player who knows nothing about football, and as a result, made lots of bad football decisions. I suspect Scott was more concerned with trying to angle for his own contract extensions than the well-being of the conference. Tough to win big when the guy in charge is worried mostly about the guy in charge.

A: The ex-Fox Sports Network president, Bob Thompson, placed Oregon’s media-rights value at $30 million and Stanford’s at $45 million when I pressed him. That may be all that would normally matter to the Big Ten. However, I think Oregon’s national brand and Phil Knight’s clout give the Ducks the edge. If the Big Ten takes Oregon, I would expect there to be some sort of subsidy or waiting period (See: Maryland) before the Ducks are allowed to take a full conference media share.
