  • For selfish reasons I'd like a zipper with Utah and UW and USC in the division. But Whit said he favors being in a Southern Division with UCLA and USC.

Oh, and, choke on this Cougarboard:

Bidding war over the Pac-10’s TV rights is already developing
Sure, the Pac-10 may not have gotten everything it wanted from expansion. But with networks already lining up for its television rights, the conference is in line for a major windfall.

It's true that Scott fell short of his ultimate goal, but he breathed life into the Pac-10, and that shouldn't be underestimated.

I see the Pac-10 as a sleeping giant. Over the past decade, it has been one of the most underutilized brands in the sports industry. It has the worst TV deals of any major college conference.

Scott is in a no-lose situation; he has nowhere to go but up. Thanks to some of his bold moves, the conference stands on the cusp of bringing in more media dollars than the Pac-10 has ever seen.

Utah State University. But no doubt he's Mormon, so that explains it all.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Wilner already covered this in the article linked by Ted. It is obvious that the Pac-10 is currently an undervalued brand. The question Wilner raises is whether or not Colorado/Utah adds any to the bump in TV contract money the current 10 members were going to already get under a new contract. His expert doesn't necessarily think so.

More interesting is why you even care what CB or any other BYU Fan thinks. You won the prize. Yet you still can't shake your DSORB prism.

The Far East shift intones. CUF has 24 hour coverage. What other sports board can claim as much?

You missed the most obvious. The LDS church pays his salary.

              • How ironic that Gordon Monson is saying all the upbeat, generous, self-celebaratory things that BYU fans OUGHT to be saying, and Doug Robinson has joined the whinefest. I wonder if Robinson thinks he said anything revelatory; if he's really that clueless.

Meh, big deal. We have known all along that Monson is a Ute.

Wow, you really crave approval from BYU fans and I guess, as pointed out above, Aggie fans.

                    • I'm not sure what's so offensive about Robinson's article. He was off on the 14 million mormon thing. People in Chile aren't going to be watching BYU football games. But besides that, it was pretty accurate.

When BYU plays in most of the Pac 10 cities, it brings a ton of fans. Does anyone realistically think that Utah can bring anything close to what BYU could bring in this regard? When I attended the BYU v. UCLA game back in 1993, BYU had probably 15k fans in the Rose Bowl. Utah won't do that.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                      • Interesting tidbit on CU:

Dan Hawkins still has the fall to save his job as coach, but fans -- and Denver Post columnist Woody Paige -- are already bringing up possible successors. Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is expected to be a buzzworthy candidate (Leach is a California native who grew up in Wyoming and attended BYU before getting his J.D. from Pepperdine, so he has lots of ties to the Pac-12 region), but Paige says the Buffaloes won't touch Leach because of the circumstances surrounding his firing in Lubbock.

Paige throws four other names out there: California DL coach Tosh Lupoi, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and Denver Mullen coach Dave Logan. Venables and Smart are known quantities who are among the hottest names among assistants; both should get head coaching jobs in the next year or two. Logan is a former Buffs WR who has won state titles at three different Colorado high schools and obviously would be able to recruit local prospects.

But Paige seems most excited about Lupoi, a 29-year-old former Bears D-lineman who was named Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com. Lupoi's father played at BYU, and Lupoi attended De La Salle high school in Concord, Calif., so he knows something about winning. Paige writes: "The last time CU hired an assistant who was considered the No. 1 recruiter in the country, they ended up with Bill McCartney, who won a national championship."

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Wrong thread. Also, I never said Bronco was a better coach than anyone in the Pac 10. And I was right.

Except that Utah had that many in 2006 in the Rose Bowl.

Kyle Whittingham is the best coach in the Pac 12. I say that not out of hatred or spite--as you do in saying there are unnamed assistant coaches better than Kyle--but simply on the basis of his record, his achievements, his W/L record, his season finishes, etc. Kyle has a solid empirical case for being the best coach in the Pac 12.

So choke on that. Or, go on and try to make new delusions, now that your old ones are shattered. Try to turn Laramie into Disneyland. I have no doubt BYU fans can do that. It's what they do best.
