Don't get too excited. It looks like Wyoming had a recruit there last year. Apparently they're letting anybody in now days.

Of course we also don't know if a lad or two could have been added to this list had they not gone on missions.

Also, of the four guys on the list who attended BYU prior to Jimmer, only two were LDS when they started at BYU. Young and Ainge were at BYU when a lot of these guys weren't going on missions, but I wonder if they would have gone on missions had they come to BYU in the mid 90s.

The question is whether Jimmer will do for the current generation of incoming BYU athletes, what Donnie Osmond did for the guys in the 70s and 80s.
      I hope so!

Anybody know anything about Sione Houma? He's a RB from Highland HS in Utah and he just committed to Michigan. Seems very much under the radar with 3 of the 4 services having not evaluated him at all. The Michigan coaches must love him to use one of the few remaining spots in the class on him, given that there are more 4 and 5-star guys still likely to choose Michigan than there are spots left in the class.

Seriously? Good for them. Does he have a shot at playing for them this year?
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

There were four 1st round draft picks out of the most recent Elite 11 where their fates have been more or less decided (2005). It seems like they're getting better at this and appear to be as good at picking good college QBs as the NFL is at picking good NFL QBs in the first 2 rounds of the draft (only they're picking more QBs than are picked in the first two rounds of the NFL draft). So I'm not sure what your point is.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I have no idea, but I've gotta think he would since their starting quarterback from last year left the program. Unless he's a total flop, but that never happens with Elite 11 QB's.

There are also a good amount of names of guys we never heard of and did nothing in college. Even after the 2005 class. It looks like the 2006 class won't be much to talk about either. That is what I am getting at. There are some great names that have rolled through that camp. There are also a lot of names that none of us even heard of.

I also have trouble getting excited about the highly touted. They can easily end up as busts.

Mangum has a long way to go before he proves anything. With that said if you can't get geeked up about a very high level recruit then you should probably give up being a fan.

This is going to be an interesting year for both the Cougs and the Utes simply because of the quarterback situations. Wynn has had problems and he needs to bring it this year. He should be helped by Chow's offense but he still has a lot to prove. He also needs to avoid injury. If he fails the Utes are in a world of hurt.

Heaps also has a lot to prove. The CB and TBS fans think he will eventually be a shoe-in for the Heisman and come out after his junior year. They are getting waaaaaay ahead of themselves. We got a glimpse of his capability last year but the competition wasn't that great. This year he is going to be thrown right into a blazing hot frying pan. I think he has a good enough supporting cast that they will not be a factor if he fails. Personally I think he will most likely have an amazing year. With that said I'll be happy if he ends up being as good as Beck or Hall.

Honestly I can't wait to see what the future holds for our teams.

I might be way off, but wasn't this the first year of the expanded field at the Elite "11" camp? GMan was on KALL 700 today furthering the chatter that BYU and Utah each had a QB at the Elite 11 and how exciting that was.

As far as I can tell, only one of the schools had a QB in the Elite 11. It was nice that both were invited to the Elite 24 camp. But we should probably stop propagating the myth that Utah has their first Elite 11 QB recruit.

The 2007 class includes Blaine Gabbert, Landry Jones and Andrew Luck. In other words, perhaps every member of the 2008 high school graduating class that gets drafted in the NFL first round is on the list.

It's not news to anyone that some guys on this list bomb. But QBs drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft probably have the same rate of attrition. What seems to be clear is this -- If you're on the list, it's no guarantee that you're going to make it in college or the NFL; however if you're starting in the NFL, there's a 2/3 chance that you were on the list upon entering college. If you're a 1A QB recruit not on this list, your chance at getting drafted in the first four rounds of the NFL is a fraction of guys that are in the top 11.

I don't think he's a kill joy. The anticipation is that a number of those kids -- possibly even the majority -- are going to be busts, and the reason I was even surprised by what I posted (which had exactly zero to do with projecting Tanner Mangum as an NFL QB -- let's be clear about that, since for some reason that's the direction HL decided to temporarily detour in the discussion) is because I expected the so-called Elite 11 QB's to be having even less of an impact at the highest level. This recruiting stuff out of HS is such a crap shoot (especially with QB's, since there's so many non-physical things that go on with that position that are hard to evaluate), that quite frankly I was floored that close to 70% of starting NFL QB's this year will have come through the Elite 11. I thought it would have been much, much lower. I don't follow the NFL much, but I just think of so many QB's who weren't top recruits and developed in college and continued to do so through the pros, eventually passing the other kids that were more highly touted and didn't pan out.

In youth football there are A and B teams. The A team takes the best player for that age group and the B teams get everyone else. The problem with the A team is that many (mostly their parents but some coaches too) think these guys are going to be the starters once high school ball comes around. Unfortunately for them puberty is the great equalizer. Some of the A team kids developed early and will stop early ending up average sized. Some of the B team kids who developed late will surpass them and take their spots. Happens with both the line and the skill positions.

The jump from high school to college is equally erratic. The prognosticators do their best to forecast size, skill development, etc... but you never know how a kid is going to turn out until he's up there doing it. This goes double for the quarterback position because it requires so much knowledge and the physical ability to put the knowledge into use. I think Jake is ahead of the curve but we have a long time to wait to see if Mangum will pan out. I'm glad we got Mangum but I will remain cautiously optimistic until he's back from his mission.

I was teasing Hot Lunch. I actually agree with him.

Hey, I enjoy the meandering contributions as much as the next guy! It's just this conversation started with HL going off on a discussion regarding Mangum that no one was actually having, to ending with you agreeing with HL about something nobody even actually disagreed with (ie., several highly touted QB's are going to end up busts). I've totally lost my bearings in this thread.

But the Funks need some food, and since you're hungry, maybe you can take them over some dinner.
