Interesting, the NCAA was "malicious" against Southern Cal. That never seems to happen to schools not on the west.

Chip texts Kiff "You are going to win" and an unnamed Alabama assistant texts that they are cheering for them, but not Saban because he doesn't know how to text.

Bill Plaschke on the Notre Dame game:

Eight snaps. In a bulging Coliseum that shook with roars and swayed with groans, one football season for two teams was defined in eight snaps.

That's all it took. On a Saturday night when one team rose to the national championship game while the other blew into an outpost bowl like a sad tumbleweed, the difference between them could be found in eight snaps....

            L.A. Times reports:

Monte Kiffin announced today he will resign as USC's defensive coordinator after the Trojans' bowl game.

Kiffin, the father of head coach Lane Kiffin, said he plans to pursue opportunities in the NFL where he had previously had a long coaching career.
He has faced steady criticism for his defensive strategy and exits after a disappointing 7-5 season, his third with the team.
No link yet, just an e-mail bulletin from the Times.

These are troubling times for Texas and USC. Eight seasons after the Longhorns and Trojans played one of the greatest games in college football history for the national championship in the Rose Bowl, they now appear to be in crisis.

After ugly losses Saturday night, both dropped out of the AP Top 25 on Sunday, yet another indignity for two proud programs searching for answers.

Fun stat of the week: the last two times a ranked SC team lost to an unranked Wazzoo team, the SC coach was fired. Tollner and RoboFat. lane, the bell tolls for thee.

how does kiff keep getting jobs? he is a demonstrably mediocre coach. who cares if you can recruit if you constantly underachieve?

Does he even recruit all that well? Sure he's landed some very good players, but his QB recruits - the most important position - have looked bad. Not to mention despite the Marquis Lee's of the world, SC seems to have serious depth issues and the root of poor depth is poor recruiting.

Could the poor depth relate to the NCAA penalties. I think so.. But it doesn't excuse the QB situation you speak of..

I wonder if the PSU Rb wishes he had stayed at PSU now...

Anyone can recruit to SC, I mean it is no Texas, but you have to be able to coach too.

Some jokester painted this on campus....very clever:

As has been pointed out, the recruiting hasnt been the issue. The coaching is lacking. This is all on the coach. Most of the recruiting success isnt Kiff anyway, it is Ed Orgeron.

SanCtions are over. This year SC can go out and sign around 20 kids, which would be a standard Pete class, anyway. There are no excuses other than poor coaching, poor preparation, and poor execution.

Haden is in a tough spot. I dont blame Haden for keeping Kiffin because he wasnt going to lure a top tier coach during the penalty phase, anyway. Now that it is no longer an elephant in the room for potential recruits and coaching staff hires, Haden can go out and open the money bags for next season. Over the summer he said he backed Kiffin "150%." At PAC media days he said he backed him "100%." That has to be the only time a 100% backing by your employer should give you cause for concern!

Whew! Just caught the score. Tough loss for the Trojans! Those fellas need to keep their heads up, though. Still a lot of football left to play and if they bounce back then it shows good character on their part.
