  • Well, Marvin Williams is on his way.

This is a surprising and interesting move. You add him at the 3, plug Mo in at the 1, and hope that Hayward shoots the ball more like the 2nd half than the 1st, and suddenly this team's shooting could look quite different.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

    • Very interested to hear the details on the player option final year of his contract.

Apparently it's actually less than what he's making this year. I think I saw 7.5 vs. 8.3. But in terms of buyouts and stuff, no idea.

        • Ok, now everyone can start comparing Mo to Harris.

          • Chiesa on the radio saying Williams is a smart kid who he thinks is better suited as a system guy than playing alongside guys like Johnson and Smith in an iso-heavy offense. Piggybacking BGR.

            • The tweener version of CJ Miles. ugh. The positive in this deal is that it's addition by subtraction. No Devin Harris makes the Jazz better.

On the bright side, at least O'Connor isn't sitting on his hands this offseason. He's trying.
              I'm like LeBron James.

I don't see Williams as a tweener at all. He was strictly a Small Forward all thru college and early in his career. They played him a bit more at Power Forward simply because they didn't have the big bodies in the east and he could often hold his own. I doubt we will ever see him play power forward for the Jazz. He likes to stay outside and slash, not bang down low.

I would compare him a lot more to Josh Howard than I would to CJ Miles. I am not saying that is a great comparison but he can do a bunch of things while CJ liked to shoot poorly.

Overall, the Jazz are a better team going into this year. MoWilliams and Devin are probably a wash...but hopefully an improved Hayward, Favors and Burks and the addition of Marvin should make this a better team.

                • I'll actually get excited about these moves when one of the bigs is traded for a piece that is exciting for the future.

I just can't get out of my head at the moment that Hollinger always seemed to be ripping Marvin on twitter. But who watches the Hawks? Like their fans, I don't pay any attention to them. I definitely think he's an upgrade over what we were playing with this last year.

                  Sample:
Fact I'd like to hear announcers mention: Marvin Williams can't get on the floor because Tracy McGrady and Willie Green are outplaying him.

                    Sample:
Two guys Hollinger loves to criticize are the newest members of the Jazz. One for doing absolutely nothing on defense, and one because he wasn't doing much on offense.

Two things I like about the addition of Marvin is that he's been playing for an Atlanta team that has been stagnant for years; I think he'll come in really energized. And he's going to be playing for a new deal, and his style of play doesn't mean he'll be chucking shots up to get noticed in trying to do that.

One thing I don't like about the addition of Mo is that he's going to be playing for a new deal, and his style of play does mean that he'll be chucking up shots to get noticed.

Judging by the last few pages, I think I'm more excited about Mo Williams than most and less excited about Marvin Williams. As PGs, Mo and Harris are close, but Mo is a much more consistent and skilled outside shooter and that will be a plus for the Jazz. If the Jazz are going to have a PG who can't make plays for teammates and make guys better, it might as well be a guy who is a consistent three point threat.

I'm even less excited about Mo as a starting PG. But can't be too disappointed about his replacing Harris.

This is the danger of trying to stay good while also trying to become a great team.

Instead of playing your young guys more to see them develop and get a better read on their future, you play your vets bigger minutes than you should all year, push for the playoffs, get it handed to you in 4 games, and then don't draft Harrison Barnes.

Then you make a few moves in the off-season that improves your team, you get thinking that you can move up a few seeds in the playoffs, and the front office gets gun shy about trading your leading scorer even though he's essentially blocking your future.

The Jazz are definitely a better team right now than they were at the start of last season. It is still to be decided if they care more about being even better next year, or trying to get the 6 seed this year.

Mo and Harris both have glaring issues in their games. But Mo's shooting helps fill a need on this team, and I think he actually still cares about playing in the NBA, so that is a plus. But IIRC, the Jazz were 7th in offense last year and 21st in defense, and they moved a mediocre defensive PG for a disaster. Not a plus.

Got to get you drinking some Tar Heel kool-aid. At the very least, one thing you always here about Marvin from those around the UNC program is that he is one of the best guys to ever come through the program. How many wins is that worth?

Agreed about Mo being a starting PG. He's basically a Devin Harris clone. They will both get you about 15-17 ppg and 5 assists and shoot in the low 40s. But Mo has a career average of 40% 3s and Harris a career average of 30% 3s.
