Missed the game on a flight. Looks like it went about as expected.

Getting embarrassed by Popovich happens to plenty of coaches, but this series is going to get ugly for Corbin. Just one lineup in the first half showed how out of his league Corbin is.
Subs from both teams had Favors and Jefferson in for Utah, matched up against Bonner and Splitter for SA. When SA was on offense, Utah matched Jefferson against Splitter and Favors on Bonner. I kind of get the initial thinking from Corbin, believing Jefferson would get lost on the perimeter so Favors had to guard Bonner. But it played in perfectly well to what SA wanted to do because Jefferson is a disaster on SnR defense, especially when Favors isn't in the lane to cover his mistakes. But if Corbin had moved Favors to Splitter, SA would've just started running SnR with Bonner as the pick man and the results would've been similar because, again, Jefferson is a disaster on defense. With 2:30 left in the game he was involved in a high pick at about 20 feet and he didn't hedge, didn't push his pick man out farther, didn't drop off to stop penetration...he just stood there and did nothing.
So what did Corbin do to counter SA's lineup and stategy? Surely he pulled Jefferson and put Millsap in. Or at the very least he posted Favors up against Bonner. No, "Coach" decided to just let it ride on defense, while giving the ball to Jefferson against a solid defender on offense and letting things stagnate before more of the bench came into the game for Utah and movement was restored to the offense.
Maybe someone will get hurt so Corbin will be forced into actually making a good decision again.

What a bunch of baloney. He didn't use it until the 4th when the game was not in doubt (except for a very quick stint in the 3rd). And even if his analysis were correct about being scared of Matt Bonner, that's all me more reason to go with it early in the game. With SA starting Leonard, that's a great matchup for Millsap at the 3. Leonard can't shoot the 3 and Millsap can negate everything else Leonard does well while dominating offensively.Tyrone Corbin on the big lineup "we used it a lot in the 2nd half, it is a little bit more difficult the way they space the floor with Steven Jackson at the 3 and Matt Bonner at the 4, big guys tendency is to fall back to the paint if you have a 4 man who can shoot and 3 man spreading the floor, I have two guys used to going to the basket and then they get wide open shots, they got three wide open three pointers because of that."
The Jazz are not going to win this series, but like SMR said, It'd be nice to see them try. Which also means, the 5 guys on the B team shouldn't be on the floor together.

Wow. That explanation is disappointing on a couple major levels. Is Corbin really so clueless?Originally posted by Jacob View PostWhat a bunch of baloney. Popovich is Michelangelo. Corbin is the best finger-painter in Mr. O'Connor's 2nd grade class."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

Some good stuff from SLC Dunk
Look how out of position Jefferson is here, and that is even after not stopping the PG very effectively:Not enough can be said about Gordon Hayward's game 1. It was a performance that slips under the radar easily, but not only did he make 12 of 12 free throws, he really muted Manu Ginobili. Ginobili started the game 3 of 4 from the field with two dunks and one 12 foot baseline jumper. He then misses his next 6 shots the rest of the game and only shoots 2 free throws for the game. This is the same Ginobili who shot 6 free throws a game the last time we met him in the playoffs, including a 15-15 performance.
As for the free throws I am having a hard time finding a guy who got to the line 12 times in their playoff debut. He attacked the rim aggressively and often. When Malone scored his 23 points, he only shot 3 free throws. In his 3rd season, in his playoff debut, Lebron James went 7 for 11 at the free throw line. It took Dwyane Wade 10 playoff games before he shot over 10 free throws.

Corbin is such an idiot
Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin decided he wanted some playoff experience in the starting lineup in Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs and that's why he replaced DeMarre Carroll with Josh Howard at small forward.
The move came as a surprise because Howard just came back after recovering from knee surgery and the team was playing well with Carroll as a member of the first unit.
Even though Howard struggled in Game 1 with zero points in 16 minutes, Corbin plans on starting him again in Game 2.
"That [experience] means a lot," Corbin said. "He's got a lot of experience and we really feel that he can help us."
Corbin isn't sure how much Howard will play Wednesday against San Antonio.
"We'll see how the game develops," Corbin said. "I'm not going to put a minute cap on it. But we need that experience Josh can bring to the table."
He sucks but at least he has experience. Hey Corbin, neither of those jokes should be starting.

I may be the only person not terribly upset about Howard starting over Carroll. Howard sucks, but Carroll does too. Given the choice, I'd go with Carroll, but it's very close. I think Carroll is more consistently not as bad as Howard, but Howard has a higher ceiling in terms of his chances of getting hot and going for 15-20 on 50%+ FGs.I'm like LeBron James.

I pretty much agree. But the problem with Howard is he takes shots away from much more efficient players because his usage rate is so much higher than Carroll's. I'm just guessing on that as I don't have the numbers. As you've implied, the more important lineup decisions he is screwing up elsewhere. But as for Howard, it is disconcerting that Corbin is using this playoff experience canard. Either he's the best player to start at that position, or he is not. His playoff experience has little to do with it and is not benefiting the Jazz even slightly, IMO.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostI may be the only person not terribly upset about Howard starting over Carroll.
