LOL, didn't you say I didn't understand things last week for predicting that the Sloan bashers would be saying this very thing by the end of the season?

    Yep you did; http://cougaruteforum.com/showthread...534#post532534

Well I guess you were right, I said spring and we are still 33 days until spring.

In fairness to Jacob, I don't think he's complaining at all.

True, many people say someone quit on something as a compliment.

He's not complimenting Sloan, but that's neither here nor there. You said people would complain about Sloan quitting on the team. The word complain invokes an element of discontent or unhappiness. I don't think Jacob is upset or unhappy that Sloan retired.

          • On an unrelated note, someone over on CB was posting some trash about Hayward last night. I had meant to post some impressions of him after I went to the OKC game but had forgotten.

I think many opinions about Hayward would change if more people got to sit court side and watch him. He clearly stood out as one of the better athletes on the court and that was in a game that included Westbrook, Durant, and Ibaka. He moves his feet on defense really well, he's got a quick burst when he really needs to get moving up the court, and I'm really impressed with how well he gets off the court without taking time to gather himself. I know we keep getting confirmations that he is a better athlete than many expected, even after his numbers were good at the combine, but seeing him up close again was really impressive.

He is the best 2 on the team right now and should be starting and getting consistent minutes each night. He's ahead of Bell's TS% by about 1%, but he's killing CJ in TS% and eFG% and as a rookie Hayward is a far better on the ball defender and passer. He doubles Raja's rebound rate and at 8.3 he's higher than CJ's 8.0. And Hayward more doubles the FT rates of CJ and Bell.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to this thread other than on Jerry's quitting day, so sorry if these items have all been pointed out multiple times already.

This is correct. I haven't changed my position on the matter since that post. I never thought Sloan was forced out by players or management. He quit. Like I said, he's earned that right. Also, I'm glad he did. Not complaining in the slightest. Not complaining that he quit. Not complaining about the Jazz performance resulting from his quitting--or retiring, if you prefer. I am using the words in the same sense.

You were more fun when you were trolling mpfunk about Miller failing the conditioning test in Portland. You take yourself to seriously in this thread. You are on my "super serious in the Jazz thread, but comical other places" list.

Good points. I have to agree that I like Gordon even though I have been trashing the pick from the moment it was made. But, while I like Hayward, and agree with almost everything you said, I'm not sure whether he will be good or whether he's better than the other options at the 2 right now.

I'm not sure he is quite as good of an athlete as you say, but he uses it better than most in that he is attacking so much. Usually smartly, sometimes not. But while I thinks he looks like he is doing the right things on D, I think veteran players' eyes light up when they see that he is guarding them, so they attack him, resulting in fouls and points. I can't say for sure that the other team gains a large advantage by going after him, but I think they do. As Locke has been pointing out, while Gordon looks pretty good, the Jazz rarely outplay their opponent while he is on the court.

Still, I'd like to see a stretch of games with CJ and AK in the starting lineup together.

I'm probably too serious in most places. Good point. I'll try an lighten up. The problem is I usually assume others are being serious, so I respond in kind. Probably should lose that assumption here.

The Jazz don't outplay their opponent when anyone is on the court. That's how you lose 12 of 16. ha.

I like Gordon. I read some of the comments from CB last night, and I absolutely don't get the hate. Not to mention some of them were rather hysterical. He can't rebound! On a night he grabs 8 boards. He only makes shots when open! Like we want guys to be shooting when they're blanketed by a defender? Good stuff.

To be honest the only thing that has disappointed me a bit about him is his FT shooting. I understand getting lost on offense and defense and making the wrong reads and stuff like that, but he should be hitting +80 from the line right now. Hopefully it will come.

Which I think happens when CJ is guarding them as well, but since Miles is on the court more and isn't a rookie it isn't as obvious. And if guys don't think they can go for 40 when CJ is on them than they're stupid and poorly coached.

I didn't mean to sound as if Hayward as a rookie is the long sought after solution at SG or that playing him more will somehow turn this season around. A significant reason Gordon's shooting numbers look so much better than CJ's is because he isn't creating on his own as much and doesn't have to take bad shots with the clock winding down as much as Miles does. But Hayward also doesn't set up a foot behind the arc on the wing constantly, and he doesn't step back away from the hoop any time he's taking a jumper inside the three-point line like CJ.

I guess my take on Hayward is that each time I've seen him live I've come away more impressed, I think he definitely projects as the most complete 2/3 on the team, and he's shown enough to justify more minutes to try to build up his willingness to be more aggressive and active in the offense because he's got the skills and ability to make it work.
