I agree that if we zone we go with the slides we used against UNM. In many ways, this team has the UNM fingerprint. The big problem is the three guys with 3 point range. That allows you to introduce the ball with one three point shooter, swing it to a second who can also penetrate, and screen for the third to get an open look. The screener (Tyus) will be in a position for an offensive board. We would then have to counter by shifting our middle aggressively out to the corner but that leaves our weak side guy guarding Macklin one on one in the post. If we zone, we put Noah back on a side instead of in the middle. I have hopes we can guard them man. If we can, I'll feel a lot better about our D. I couldn't find a trend in their losses regarding zone so that may change my opinion.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI think we zone a lot more than man. We may use some situational changing of the defense like after a timeout to counter whatever Billy may have drawn up in the huddle. And I think we'll start in man like we usually do until we get a feel for their offense. The zone has been effective against Florida this season. We'll just have to closeout quickly after they kick out of the double before they can reverse it like New Mexico was able to.
This is going to be a very difficult game for BYU to win IMO. I am hopeful that we can suck them into running with us and taking them out of their half court game. If we can get them to jack up 32 three-pointers like they did last year that would help too. This will be the biggest team we have faced since UCLA and we had Davies and Collinsworth for that game.
I think you are spot on regarding pace and enticing them to try and shoot threes with us.

Magnusson story.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostThe only thing I noticed was that Magnusson PF seemed to be practicing in anticipation of playing tomorrow.
I met Magnusson's mom at one of the home games. We chatted about her son and I told her I called him the World's Strongest Man. She jokingly said, "That isn't related to basketball." I smiled. Perceptively, considering she's his mom, she said, "Don't worry, Logan doesn't think he is a basketball star either. He loves BYU and loves basketball and is just happy to be able to practice with the guys. I think he would practice with them and try to help them be better even if he knew he wouldn't play." Rebuked I told her I thought he had a role on the team and contributed well.
Bottom line, Logan may have gotten blocked by the rim but he sure as hell puts in the time and effort. He knows he is barely serviceable but is willing to do anything to help the team win.

I noticed that they were doing a one bounce drill and the move was soft for all of them. No wonder we can't score in the post. KC's wrong direction fade away off one bounce was ugly. Anderson's move probably looked the best.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThe one thing I noticed most about that clip was the fact that our bigs were less than 50% on an unguarded 5 feet jump hook.

Awesome story, to bad this is not highschool or even junior high. We are wasting a D-1 college scholarship on a guy that was blocked by the bottom of rim. But man he sure tries hard.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostMagnusson story.

The second he was offered a scholarship having watched him all through high school I knew he would never be worth a damn. The kid sucks and he is barely serviceable.*Banned*

KC wanted no part of using his left hand. I agree Andersons looked decent.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostI noticed that they were doing a one bounce drill and the move was soft for all of them. No wonder we can't score in the post. I don't know that we wasted the scholarship. It would require us to have had another option. Same with Zylstra and Martineau. Those three guys are the most questionable on the roster and I don't recall us letting a great prospect go in favor of them.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostAwesome story, to bad this is not highschool or even junior high. You know who we miss? Jordan Cameron. He was a brutal loss. Great talent and athleticism at a spot we could use the help.

Anderson's problem truly isn't a skill or coordination issue, it is the lack of butt and hamstring strength. He plays high because he lacks strength and he gets moved because he plays high.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostKC wanted no part of using his left hand. I agree Andersons looked decent.

Auburn plays a zone and they held a cold shooting Florida team to 45 points. But other than them, I think most SEC schools play man. Like you said, I think this team is closer to UNM than SDSU. They're UNM with size though.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostI agree that if we zone we go with the slides we used against UNM. In many ways, this team has the UNM fingerprint. I think this will be a game where our best defense will be to outscore them. I really do think we'll be able to get them to run though and play some H-O-R-S-E with us. If they do and we're getting contributions from two other guys not named Jimmer I like our chances. I think we can space them out and bring their bigs away from the hoop. I wouldn't be surprised to see that high ball screen set further out than it usually is (which is ridiculously deep already).
Inside, Mags and Anderson are going to have to use every foul and make their horrible shooters earn it at the stripe where they're terrible."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
