I didn't stick around long enough to hear them talk about themselves.Originally posted by byu71 View PostHow much of the time did he and DJ spend talking about themselves. That is my biggest problem with them. It seems everytime they talk about something, half of the time is spent intejecting comments about themselves.
I think DJ has the capacity to be pretty good on the radio. But he needs someone there with him. He doesn't do as well by himself (as seen when PK is on vacation and DJ is alone) but DJ does an excellent job of offering analysis and insight as part of a discussion or conversation. He just needs someone to work with.
Unfortunately, PK thinks he is pretty funny. And he thinks he knows stuff. And if I'm being honest I'll even agree that he does know some stuff and when he's on his game he and DJ carry on a pretty good show.
Unfortunately, PK thinks his game is making jokes, singing songs, telling music trivia, and poking fun at DJ for being on TV and/or making lots of money. I can't believe he doesn't have the self-awareness to even notice how he causes the show to come to a screeching halt as often as he does - and I can't believe no one has told him yet. And I'm not sure he knows that they are paying him to be on a SPORTS talk show.
Unfortunately, DJ allows PK to suck him in more than he should and they end up carrying on about something stupid. I'd love to have him simply say "Uh huh. Thanks for that..." and then continue with the sports talk when PK turns silly.
So - when PK isn't screwing it up, I think he and DJ are capable of having a good show. I wish it came in more than short spurts.

while you and I, and most everyone I talk to think it sucks, it is the highest rated sports talk show in Utah, so why would they tell him to do something different?
wait, maybe this should be in the "Utah is effing weird" thread.

Back to the Game Bitches!
I've been thinking about this Florida team and thought I would put my thoughts down. Please feel free to disagree, criticize or point out something I have missed. This team is an interesting matchup. A short summary would have them a better shooting but worse defensive team than SDSU but that description does not tell the story.
Overview: Florida is an efficient team on offense. It like to attack in a variety of ways. They can score in the post or on the perimeter and are very good at offensive rebounding and staying away from fouling (very SDSU like in that way). Despite being a good enough 3pt shooting team, they score mostly from 2 pt land, have poor foul shooting and play very good 3 point defense (this is not Gonzaga). They are very tall at the 3, 4, and 5 spots but a bit undersized at the 1 and 2. Also, despite being considered "more athletic" they play a much slower pace than we do.
Players:
Macklin 6-10, 240 -- Macklin touches the ball alot because their offense is predicated on post touches. Despite that, he doesn't pass out for assists often. They usually swing the ball to a cutter after the kick out from the post. Macklin scores a lot off the offensive glass and blocks shots well. He has very quick hops considering his size. Horrible foul shooter.
Parsons 6-9, 218 -- Parsons could be as big as 6-10 but either way he has the skill set of a much smaller guy. He can pass, handle, shoot from range, and rebound defensively. He creates mismatches regularly with his size and ability to score from the perimeter and play face up ball in space. Makes great cuts. Horrible foul shooter.
Tyus 6-8, 220 -- Tyus does the dirty work. He rebounds and defends. It is not uncommon for him to be ignored in the offense while he sets picks and moves around creating space. Once the shot goes up, his offensive possession begins. He is a monster on the offensive glass. Mostly blocks shots from the weak side. He is a poor foul shooter as well.
Boynton 6-2, 183 -- Small for a 2 guard but has long arms and good feet. He takes good care of the ball. Takes and makes a lot of 3s. Did a solid job on Jimmer last year prior to the overtime games. Will get absolutely abused by Jimmer this year if they try the same defensive scheme.
Walker 5-8, 171 -- Excellent ball handler, very quick, can shoot from range and hits them at a high clip. Gets good steals on ball with ball pressure. Gets to the foul line very well.
Key Reserves:
Young is a back-up at center with good height and a very big body. He has been playing a similar role to Tyus with the aggressive rebounding and shot blocking. This kid was McDonald's AA last year and is really coming on.
Wilbekin is a defensively skilled player who is very similar to Boynton. Gives nice energy and aggressiveness.
Strategy:
I think we can man this team up. Hartsock will do a solid job on Macklin. Macklin is used to being the undersized quick guy and Hartsock should be able to stay in front of him. KC will need to guard Parsons and would be giving up size but would be defending a type of player at a position he is comfortable defending. Abuou would have a very tough assignment because he would guard Tyus and would be forced to double Macklin on deep catches and multiple bounce possessions. This would let Tyus get on the offensive glass and is probably the reason we don't do too much man. Jimmer would get Boynton and Jax would get Walker. I don't think there are too many bad matchups there and we wouldn't need to double too much considering how their offense works. Best of all it would let us rebound better and allow us to push the pace.
We can zone Florida but if we do we run a substantial risk of not getting out to their 3 three point shooters while still giving up too much on the offensive glass. If we go zone, we probably find ourselves with a lot of matchup stuff that will morph our 2-3 into a 3-2 looking zone. Again, this doesn't help us inside or on the glass.
Offensively, I think our ability to spread the floor outside the perimeter will be key. I think KC can attack Parsons off the bounce (they mostly play zone) and I think Abuou can attack Tyus off the bounce. Jimmer can attack anyone off the bounce. The result is that we will see a lot of help from Macklin who won't be comfortable playing out where Noah is. Noah's 3 point shooting will be crucial again offensively and he has to make himself available early on. Jackson should be able to get his shot off against either potential defender given his shooting style. He shouldn't pump fake, either Walker or Boynton will rip that soft pumpfake and it is unnecessary.
I think we'll see that little side scissor cut play work well against Florida like it did against Gonzaga and SDSU.
Once again this will be a pace game. I think we'll have a lot of trouble stopping them defensively but liberal changes between zone and D should keep them off balance. We need to rebound and we need to push off misses or makes. I expect Florida will only send two to the offensive glass in an effort to slow our running. If we get this thing in the 75 range, it will be a win for us. Jimmer can still win it for us in a slow game but we would need a lot more luck.

Have you seen/heard the competition?
This is a little like being the champion of the CBI at the end of the year. Um, let's see. You not only couldn't get into the NCAA, but you also sucked too much to be in the NIT. But congrats on that CBI win...
