  • BYU's seeding has received a fair amount of attention lately. In the 11 tourneys from 2000-2010, I looked at performance by seed.

Out of 44 opportunities a 2-seed has had to reach the Sweet 16, they've done it 26 times, or 59% of the time.

    Reaching Sweet Sixteen
    Seed Appearances. %success
    1 38 86%
    2 26 59%
    3 26 59%
    4 17 39%
    5 18 41%
    6 14 32%

    Reaching Elite 8
    Seed Apps. %success
    1 32 73%
    2 19 43%
    3 13 30%
    4 3 7%
    5 5 11%
    6 4 9%

The large dropoff in success in reaching the elite 8 from a 3 to a 4 makes sense intuitively as the 4's usually have to go through a 1 seed to get it done...

A lot depends on Carlino and Harrison. I expect them to be pretty good eventually, just not sure how good next year.
The fact that both will be or are currently practicing with the team now is no small thing. Carlino needs to absorb the crossover 25 footer.

If they were at major programs, they would not be considered impact players their first year. At mid-major programs such as BYU and the rest of the WCC, they are impact right out of the gate. Add to it Carlino practicing first with UCLA then with BYU for a total of 1 year in college level hoops and he will be an immediate impact. Harrison's prep school is a similar level.

        • ESPN Insider reporting that Rose, Nashif and LaComb are all in Washington visiting Jordan Chatman today. Man I'd love to get a verbal/commitment out of him.

If he feels the Holy Jimmer he will.

I think that is a HC violation.

My understanding was that Jordan Chatman has always been courting us but we have not always been courting him. I think he is in the bag. He has shown well at his new school with a better coach and better basketball history. He has good length for his height and great skills. He can play the 1/2/3 depending on how he grows and how we use him. I really like him and think he will have a large impact because he is so highly skilled.

                • Just found this link on Chatman that lists him as the best Junior in Washington right now based on how the season is going:
                  http://www.seatownsports.net/high-sc...gton-2111.html

This kid is legit. He isn't going to overwhelm with his athleticism but he has excellent skills. He uses his long arms to handle well in traffic and can shoot accurately off the catch.

I think it's an I-don't-seriously-want-to-ever-feel-the-spirit-again violation on my part.

Not sure if Chatman would be a 4 straight year guy, but having him, Winder, and Carlino together would be a great mix of combo guards that are all about 6'3", can dribble and shoot, bring the ball up the court or spot up on the wing, create offense for themselves or pass well enough to set others up. And having that versatility from those three would fit the skills of Harrison and Haws very well along the perimeter.

The way his dad talks about BYU on Twitter you've got to think Chatman will be headed to Provo as long as the coaches want him.

My thought too. Carlino is the best shooter, Harrison is the best athlete, Chatman has the best length. All can drive and shoot the ball and have basic pg skills.

Rose's ability to continue to bring in good to very good wing players is encouraging to say the least. There will be a Jimmer drop off to be sure but I expect us to enter the WCC as the preseason favorite. Am I aiming too high? Possibly.

And not to dampen that enthusiasm but I sure hope that one of these RM bigs can come in and play right away. Either way, I'm excited about the future of BYU basketball.

I'm glad he apparently inherited his dad's arms - that was the thing about Jeff Chatman - not the best athlete, but he had those looooooong arms to grab rebounds.

Jeff had a great baseline shot, IIRC. You're right about his arms though. He was The Black Inspector Gadget.

I don't know if Nate Austin will be ready to play right after his mission but he has range out to 3 and the ability to pass effectively. At AAU games he also had some outrageous rebound games (20+) against good to very good competition. I think his back to the basket game is weak but other than that, I think he will be a good addition to the team. We might not need him next year with CC, BD, NH, SR, and JA so he might redshirt but I think he has a very good skillset with good size.
