Carlino is withdrawing from UCLA and transferring. He's reportedly narrowed his choices to BYU, UNLV, and Butler. Upon giving Howland his notice he immediately flew to SLC to watch the BYU/UA game.

Edit: His HS team was one of the best in the country and was ranked #1 for awhile last year. In 7th grade Lute Olson offered him and he gave a verbal. After his So. year in HS he moved to Bloominton, Ind. Tom Crean then offered him and he verballed. Then came Howland and Billy Donovan both talking him into skipping his senior year to enroll and play early. He took Howland's offer.

It depends on what you read and who you talk to. He gets lots of JP Losman comparisons because of his moving around which is a bit of a red flag. But everyone says the kid can shoot. I am not sure he is a PG. He was recruited by Howland to play the 2 and promised playing time. But he suffered a concussion in practice and missed 3 games with it and when he was cleared still couldn't get off the bench. Many say the dagger was when UCLA was shooting 12% against Montana and Howland still wouldn't put him in. I think he's a year or two away. He should be a senior right now after all. But he had legit offers by some name programs and coaches so their has to be something there.

He was also committed to Indiana! It appears to me that both Ben Howland and Tom Crean thought the kid could play, as Howland talked the kid into graduating HS early to enroll at UCLA in what should have been his senior year of HS. If BYU lands him I hope they also get a JC insurance policy given that the kids history indicates that perhaps he might leave and/or have enormous maturity issues, but clearly two top coaches thought the kid was worth a scholarship and that he had potential. I say roll the dice and give it a shot. As a kid who fancies himself a scoring pg, I would think BYU's transition offense would look attractive.

I do think his 14 ppg average was as high as Nick Martineau's hs scoring average, and Martineau didn't even get an offer from the University of Utah!

      • From Coach Rose:

Shawn Miller called Dave Rose more than once over the past few days since the Az game. They knew each other from when BYU played Xavier in the Dance.

Miller asked about one of BYU's defensive strategies: 3 on their 4, and 4 on their 3. No one has done that yet, and it was effective. He also asked about some other things. Like, everytime the ball went out under their basket, BYU went zone. I guess they are sharing info because we wont be playing AZ anytime soon.

Gives kudos to James Anderson. Said it's really hard to rebound within a zone. Anderson snagged 4-5 rebounds from within the zone, which allowed BYU to play zone more than usual.

Jimmer was very active. Very confident. He saw a lot of space and created a lot of space.

        Next up: Terry Nashif. Brother.

Did not know Nashif was on Rose's first staff, as D Ops, the position Mike Hall has now, right? Isn't that like captain of the towel boys?

Nashif now helps design the defense, and works with the guards (Jimmer) . He's the Chad Bunn of the organization. He also recruits players 5'9" and less. Oh wait--everyone laughed after he said that.

What does this mean? Like putting our 3 man on their 4 man? I noticed we finally used the lineup I've been pining for for some time. Jimmer, Jax, Charles, Kyle all in together with a center. I'd like to see that more often and less of Magnusson. Charles and KC are both great rebounders and between Charles' muscle and Kyle's length they can both guard most 4's.

I didn't notice that. Up until recently (if this is how we're doing it now), we always play man when the ball goes out under the basket, even if we were previously in a zone. I noticed this because it's exact opposite of how I was coached in high school and how I coached my AAU team. We always went zone on an in bounds play to avoid something inside. Although you do have to get out on three point shooters.

I like Miller a lot. He is SO positive about BYU and Jimmer. He couldn't stop talking about Jimmer before and after the game last year. I was thinking "man he is not going to win over any of his fans talking like this about Jimmer after that game."

Yes. And our 4 man on their 3.

              • According to MaxPreps, Cougar commit Isaac Nielson is averaging 16 ppg, 14 rpg, and 6 bpg through 5 games this year. His team has won each of the games. I have no idea what kind of competitions he is going up against or what kind of talent he is playing with on his team. He has made 60% of his FGs and 52% of his FTs.

For those that might be able to give us a bit more info, he plays at Mission Viejo. The games this year have been against: Carter out of Rialto, Santiago in Corona, Colony in Ontario, Upland, and La Habra.

Mission Viejo actually has a decent basketball team. The problem is they're a football powerhouse so hoops doesn't draw much attention. That's Mark Sanchez' alma mater FYI.

Regardless it's a decently competitive league. Mission Viejo had a decent team last year going to quarterfinals of CIF beating my alma mater to get there (My HS was pretty good last year winning a very competitive Foothill League and losing just 4 games all year I think). Upland last year went to CIF semi-finals in their division. Not sure how good they are this year. I don't know much about the other schools. My cousins graduated from Santiago in Corona. They made CIF playoffs last year but they're not very good this year. Centennial HS in Corona is the HS for sports.

He's really intriguing as a prospect. He is far too skinny but is reported to have nice basic fundamentals and potential for athleticism. Unfortunately, that was the Anderson report out of Page Arizona.

                          • I think this is a nice get. A little depth at guard with Emery and Jimmer graduating won't hurt. Especially one that is a shooter.

If true this is a huge get. Nick Martineau isnt the post-jimmer era answer at point guard
