A few weeks back I posted that BYU had four losable games left in the regular season: SDSU, @UNM, UNLV and @SDSU. I thought BYU was probably going to lose two. @SDSU goes without saying as the most likely game BYU may lose, but in my mind the second was @UNM. BYU's now played three of these games and they're 2-1. I think BYU's going to lose @SDSU.

And SDSU may end up winning the conference and getting the #1 seed in the conference tourney as a result of that damn UNM game. Which means -- REEEEEEEE----BELLLLLLS in the second round of the UNLV postseason invitational. So, we're looking at, IMO, four losses before the NCAA tourney which I think will result in a #4 seed.
I think BYU has a shot at SDSU. We are experimenting with better rebounding line-ups and SDSU has a serious problem trying to guard Jimmer with only one serviceable guard on the roster. I haven't written off a two loss regular MWC season for us.

Even if we do lose, I am not afraid of this UNLV squad. They don't have the scorer they've had in the past and are finding it hard to score. They outrebounded us by 9 on Saturday but still lost because of 30% shooting. They don't shoot well and it is killing them.

Finally, if we lose at SDSU and lose in the tournament at UNLV, I still see a 3 seed. A four loss team with a top 8 rpi, 6-2 against the top 25 rpis does not get a 4. It gets a 3. Right now our resume is sick. If we had not lost at UNM we would be threatening a #1 seed at this point. We are getting a ton of help from teams we have beaten and our resume is extremely good. A four loss BYU team with the losses you indicate and Jimmer Fredette at the point gets a 3.

According to Ken Pomeroy, we had a #10 RPI last year. We had five losses prior to the tourney and ended up with a #7 seed. I would like a #3 with four losses, but I'm skeptical.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Realtimerpi had us at 23 to end the season but I don't know what we were at prior to that.

I think type of losses are different. I also think type of wins are different. At this point our SDSU win is better than any win we had last year. Last year we had two wins against SDSU who was an 18 rpi. We then balanced those with two losses against UNM who was a top 10 rpi. Then we went 1-2 against UNLV. OOC we had a win against 63 ASU.

Looking at our OOC record right now and you see the USU and Arizona wins are as good as any win we had last year. At this point I think our resume is much stronger this year. I could be wrong.

I think Jimmer and a top 10 win and wins against tournament teams not from the MWC will ensure a good seed if we keep winning. I am pretty sure that the NCAA wants Jimmer to make a run. I think as long as we don't blow any bad games from here on out the NCAA will give us a favorable path.

This year is different because of the cult of Jimmer. Jimmer is a commodity and the nation is buying. It would be foolish of the NCAA to give BYU a bad seed and therefore limit Jimmer's draw. People want to see Jimmer for more than 1 or 2 games.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

A fourth seed is supposed to make it to the sweet 16 and that would be three games for BYU. I'm not sure how much the committee will be willing to help BYU out beyond a fourth seed. You also have to look at the timing of the potential third and fourth losses -- late in the regular season and the second round of the conference tourney.

              I see five different scenarios:

              1. BYU wins out and gets a #1 seed.
              2. BYU loses at SDSU but wins the conference tourney and gets a #2 seed.
              3. BYU wins at SDSU but loses in the final of the conference tourney and gets a #2 seed.
              4. BYU loses at SDSU and loses in the final of the conference tourney against SDSU and gets a #3 seed.
              5. BYU loses at SDSU and loses in the second round of the conference tourney and gets a #4 seed.

The way I see it is that the conference tourney is a three horse race -- SDSU, BYU and UNLV and no one else. New Mexico could create some noise from the 4 or 5 spot in the second round, but I don't think so. Either BYU or SDSU will be the #1 seed and the conference tourney final will be some combo of the three teams listed above.

              • Dave Rice on the Dave Rose Show

                1. Demarcus starts practicing with the team in Spring, and will be going to Greece with the team.

                2. Unknown if Carlino can go to Greece; they're still researching it. He's growing by leaps and bounds being able to play against Jimmer every day.

                3. Heath is a great friend to the program, and Rice is sad that this misfortune had to happen to Heath. He was a great recruiter and was just unlucky with injuries.

(Basically, Dave Rice said what KDog said almost word for word; are we sure Kdog is not Rice in disguise?)

                4. Rice loves working for Rose; there is no better boss in the world. Some time in the distant future he'd love to be a head coach but right now he just wants to win and to contribute to the team. Probably politic, but he is also having a blast coaching this team this year.

                5. Clune Arena is all but sold out. Dangerous.

                6. Recruiting priority profile: Big man who can run the court who is a gym rat and loves practice.

I was unaware this was going to be their year for a trip abroad. I know teams are allowed only one such trip every four years or so. If managed well, such trips give the team a great head start on the season--I thought BYU's last trip was very productive. With the major turnover coming in the backcourt, this is very good news. I hope Carlino gets to pack his bags.

I am really hoping that with things becoming more high profile that we can really grab someone good.

Damarcus playing in Greece is huge. Carlino will be a first team all WCC next year. The only worry I have is the pre-Carlino Cougs. I'm not convinced that Martineau can't develop enough to keep us respectable. I also believe we have a couple of combo guards on the roster who could be pressed into service in Winder (who wants to become a pg) and Harrison (who handles well in traffic and played pg before he went to prep school.

Big guy who can run the floor and is a gym rat ... Nate Austin. He may not be a post mission gym rat but he is a hoops lover, can run, has size, and can shoot from range. I truly believe he is cut from the same cloth as Chris Collinsworth. Next year we will be able to go truly big when we want to.

This made me wonder if he was calling out anyone. Especially the "loves practice" bit.

Wow. You think Carlino is first team WCC as a frosh? You must be very bullish on the team next year. I know you're bullish on Damarcus. If Carlino is first team all WCC, this is another top 20 team next year. I'm not that optimistic.

My optimism is only tempered by whether or not Davies is going on a mission. I have to assume at this point he's not going or else we'd be hearing talk about it and he'd have his papers in so he could depart as soon as the season is over. If he's back, this team is top 25 IMO and wins the WCC.

Carlino is a straight up baller. Carlino is made for what we do. He's going to blow up. Same with Harrison.

Rose is a genius if he can keep us in the top 25 next year. His strategy is so perimeter oriented, I just don't see how he's going to work that kind of magic with the roster we'll have. A lot depends on Carlino and Harrison. I expect them to be pretty good eventually, just not sure how good next year.
