I think his back to the basket game is weak but other than that, I think he will be a good addition to the team. We might not need him next year with CC, BD, NH, SR, and JA so he might redshirt but I think he has a very good skillset with good size.
I forget, has Barrack Davies officially announced his mission to the Provo, BYU Basketball mission?

I don't think he has officially announced anything. Which means that he has unofficially announced the intention to return. Only Kyle Collinsworth is planning to serve a mission.

I think BYU will be solid next year and any opponent expecting BYU to fall off of the face of the planet next year will be disapointed. I think it is likely to be Dave Rose's second worst team of his BYU tenure. I think they will be better than the Cougar's were in Rose's first year, but I expect them to be a bubble team. Making the NCAA tourney would be a huge accomplishment for BYU next year.

The club will get off to a slow start with all the new faces and with its likely starting pg not being elgible until the middle of December. I doubt the club finds a real identity until the middle of February. While the WCC is not spectacular, BYU is still going to struggle next year. Especially if Collinsworth's surgery takes 7-8 months to heal. There are some positive developments with Carlino already in the fold and Harrison planning to be here in May and available for the summer tour, but BYU is expecting two freshman to be BYU's better perimeter players. I think they will be good in time, but asking one to be a key player is too much and asking two is going to have sosme unfortunate results in year 1. I personally believe that this core, when joined by Tyler Haws, is going to be the best all around backcourt at BYU. As juniors and seniors I think they will be better than Jimmer and Jax and the rest.

As such I now covenant with you all that I will not pull string next year when things go bad at USF or Pepperdine or anywhere else. I promise to be patient and not let some unfortunate losses with a bunch of youngsters cause me to digress into stringpulling tantrums that include the words: "overrated or not ready for the next level" or whatever it is that the metrosexual shrilling faithful will throw down to sound like they know what they are talking about when next season does not bring the excitment or national acclaim that suddenly BYU hoops will have consistently enjoyed, yet not be living up to, throughout its storied history by this time next year.

Now if Harrison and Carlino develop, BYU will be a marginal top 25 team their soph year, like BYU was from 2006-2010, and I think could make national level noise when they are juniors and seniors. But I really think next year making the NCAA tourney would be a good year for BYU.

I'd agree with most of that. I will say this though, to expect that backcourt to exceed this year's is quite a lofty expectation IMO. I think I know what you're driving at in relation to those players though. Jax is a specialty player, not given to the left hand nor dribbling. Jimmer, while a prolific scorer and a good dribbler, is not the most athletic guy. I'm guessing that your expectation is Carlino, et al, will have a blend of all attributes with greater athleticism. I could be wrong about how you feel they'll be better.

Incidentally, I'll be the first to admit that quite often I am among the "metrosexual faithful" clamouring for days of yore. I too hope to not be included in that group next year.

        • Not sure if this has been posted, but a nice article about the markedly improved exposure BYU will get from the WCC vs the MWC.

          http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/...ovich.html.csp

Zaninovich pointed to the WCC’s ESPN deal as a factor in creating Gonzaga’s national profile. Certainly, BYU can expect more exposure than it’s had since the The Mtn. launched in 2006. During this regular season, Gonzaga appears on ESPN twice; ESPNU twice; and ESPN2 10 times.

BYU, on the other hand, makes no appearance on an ESPN network. The closest the Cougars get to national exposure is two appearances on Versus and four on CBS C.

          Not the same thing.

WCC games aren’t buried on ESPN networks, either. The league has prime slots on Thursdays and Saturdays.

“We have great real estate. We certainly perform very well with ESPN. And that bodes well going forward,” Zaninovich said. “We’re real excited to have BYU. I think ESPN is as well. It’s one of those convergence phenomenons that can be a win-win-win.”

And, unlike the MWC deal, BYU will be free to air games on BYUtv next season.
          Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

And when they lose both games what will be their excuse? Ref has a Mormon cousin? ESPN wouldn't let them win?

And to your point, these scheduling "quirks" happen in football so why not in basketball.

              • Does Jeff Chatman's increasing volume of tweets re: the Cougars signal that his son going to Provo is a done deal? He had 3 more today about the BYU/AFA game.

I don't know if it is "done" yet, but I really don't think there is much chance he will not choose BYU. It is clearly the family favorite and he has a mother that knows. BYU will sign two next year, they will be Jordan Chatman and Jordan Loveridge.

I am more interested in if recruiting is done for this year and if not which guy on scholie won't be next year.

A friend of mine is dating Nick Martineaus sister and rumor has it Nick has been put on notice. He may stay next year and pay his own way but his schollie is hanging by a thread.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

My opinion on BYU's backcourt being so good when Carlion, Haws and Harrison are juniors and seniors is a great deal what you write. I think all 3 will be very good at everything. Jackson Emery is good but he is just a spot up shooter and a great defender. Offensively he is limited. In fact, I think that if Tyler Haws chose to not serve a mission he would be a better all around player than Jax either this year or by next at the latest. I don't know if Tyler will ever get the steals, be as good an on the ball defender and might not be the same spot up shooter but I think his ability to drive, mid-range offensive game and rebounding will make him a better all around player as an upperclassmen.

It is also the fact that BYU will have good players at all 3 positions. Last year BYU was good and if Tyler had stayed home from his mission, BYU's backcourt would have been spectacular this year. I think Kyle, Abou and Rogers are solid players but I think that once Tyler, Matt and Demarcus develop and get familiar with each other they will be more formidable than any backcourt BYU has had. This is a long way from Sam Burgess or Ben Murdock being a starter. If one of the 3 develops into a potential AA caliber player, BYU will have its best chance to finally leave the curse of Lilliburn Boggs, like an albatross, around the neck of Mizzou.

If there ever was a year to make a splash in JC recruiting this is it. Huge exposure, much of the year spent in the Top 10, a player getting national POTY hype, and then big holes in the team next year that need to be filled.

Are there any potential recruiting repercussions to this approach? ("Will you cut my schollie if I don't perform like you did to Zylstra?").

On the other hand, if a kid is worried about losing a schollie, maybe we shouldn't be recruiting him....
