Its my assumption that you wouldn't ask for a release unless you had some other option lined up. Is that not true? We don't know much about this situation, but I can't imagine getting out and just hoping that you'll have another offer. Okay, I had to check. Chaney sat out a year and transferred to Troy State where he averaged 14.7 and 7.1 rebounds. I'll take that bet. What do you want to wager? A dinner at a restaurant of the winner's choice would be find with me. (I win either way because I like to eat.)Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostI always thought that BYU's 1996-1999 seasons (just 21 wins over 3 season) was a low point that Utah could never approach.
Now I'm not so sure -- there could be a 3-year stretch that bad for the Utes in the near future.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Ahh, you're right. Hawkins was a BYU killer. Shortest dude in the paint and he would always seems to come up with the board.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostI think that was Justin Hawkins(and he would have had 2 years plus his redshirt)Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

It's my understanding that the coaches kept Brown around because of his raw talent. I am actually relieved to see him go. Anyone who watched him very carefully could see that he was a long ways from what the team needed. Think Jimmy Soto or Andre Miller or even Nick Jacobson. The reports of his toxicity just make me feel even better.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View PostI know runnutez, who had a cup of coffee on this board before taking off was very down on Carlon Brown and many pointed to Brown and Cyphers as the key components in the lockerroom issues on the team. If that is the case, then I say good riddance.
Some of you will say I am just looking through red lenses (and of course I am, to some extent) but to me as adieddyed-in-the-wool Utah fan, last year's performance was so poor and the chemistry reportedly so bad, I am also relieved to see a house-cleaning. If next year's team still comes in at .500 but gives Ute fans some real hope for the future, I'll be OK with that.Last edited by LA Ute; 03-30-2010, 04:14 PM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Next year we'll be closer to 20 wins than 10 and if a couple of the JC guys pan out, we have a chance to make a real leap.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostIt's my understanding that the coaches kept Brown around because of his raw talent. This years team was not a top contender, but they had more talent than their record would indicate which led to much of the frustration that has been aimed at Boylen.

I don't keep up on the Utes very much, so I don't have an opinion on all this. But I do have an opinion on the overall issue of "locker room cancers" and transfers, etc.
Losing teams almost always have problems like disunity, locker room cancers, selfishness, etc. But it's a chicken and egg thing.
I believe a team loses because they don't have talent, they can't shoot, they can't play defense, they have bad coaching, whatever. Then once the losing starts, people point fingers, disunity occurs, and locker room cancers come out of the woodworks.
Same goes for unity and great locker room guys. Teams win because they have talent and execute well. Then a strong bond of unity forms and natural leaders and good character guys suddenly stand out.
A guy who's a locker room cancer once all the losing starts might have become a good character guy had he made some more shots and had more talented teammates.

I think BYU is unusual in that it hardly ever loses anyone. At Georgetown JTIII has lost a lot of guys. He lost four one year and seems to lose someone every year. One of them was the McD all-American Vernon Macklin who played for Florida in that game against BYU. I think this happens more often now. Players don't get playing time and it's almost a given they'll transfer. Needless to say this was a chronic problem under Majerus, and I saw it as a necessary evil, especialy at a place like Utah where coaches need to take risks with recruits or can't get everything on thier wish list.
Also, chalk some of this to Giacoletti's bad recruiting. Brown wasn't that good. Maybe Boylen is also getting his bearings, getting a feel for what kind of player he wants. He hasn't head coached before. Are we going to train him for big success at another gig like Majerus at Marquette?
It's clear Boylen regards his core nucleus for the future to be Foster, Henderon, Glover, Olsen, Washburn, and the new freshmen recruits. I hope he doesn't lose any of them.
The reason I hardly ever go to Utefans is I hate fans and their hand wringing when this kind of thing happens. Fans don't know anything. Nada. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I think talented teams have disunity. It happens all the time. What he said is patently wrong. But hey, he's a knuckleheaded fan, so what do you expect.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostYou really didn't even read what he wrote, did you? When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
