Let's get back to the substantive discussion and to basics. Why has BYU not won in the NCAA tournament? Junkie suggests it's some kind of psychological barrier. I disagree. Except for an aberrant run here and there from UNLV, Wyoming or BYU (thirty years ago), among old WAC/MWC teams only Utah has won in the NCAA playoffs with any consistency. Ainge didn't even do it except for that improbable run his senior year. New Mexico has entered the tournament highly ranked before and disappoitned. What's going on?

I submit that there is a big disparity in athleticism between the MWC and some of these conferences. This means that records and statistic lie if the conferences and records aren't comparable. If 30-4 meant the same thing in the Big East as as anywhere else, Murray State would be a number 1 not a number 16 seed, or, Murray State will play itself into the Final Four (we'll see if that happens, I guess). Also, playing tougher competition makes a team more resourceful, more resiliant, gives it an edge. The SEC East was as tough and athletic as any conference.

I think that in this instance Forida's much superior inside game, the coach's experience in the tournament, and, frankly, a high level of raw, albeit very young athleticism at the guard line will carry the day against BYU. That's my judgment.

One thing BIF said that makes sense is that all this BYU adulation seems a little spooky. BYU is a fashionable team right now, despite the late season collapse. I wonder why. These sports writers are more interested in their stories and titilating fans than being right or honest. I'm not judging them, it's just the way it is.
First of all why are you so enamored with Floridas "bigs"? They have not really proven to be dominant at all this year. Boynton obviously makes this team go and the fact that he is a freshman does not bode well for Florida. Also he is not a good shooter, I am sure BYU will put Emery on Boynton and Jimmer on the midget. Florida is another team that they can really zone as they have nobody that can shoot you out of it.

THey finished the season going 6-8. The only bright side with Florida is that their only real bad loss is to South Alabama. They do have wins at Michigan State, at home against Florida State, at home vs Tennessee, and at home vs Mississippi state. However besides that every good team that they played they lost too: Richmond, Xavier, Vandy (twice), Syracuse, Kentucky (twice). I just do not feel like BYU is getting some underachieving team that has the potential to go off, like maybe a Georgia Tech.

    • It should be an entertaining game either way. Florida and BYU both play the same style of game. It will come down to who plays that style better on that day.

All in all, BYU has a more than decent shot to win this game. Any word on the extent of Haws's eye injury? You'll need him.

Wasn't the Mich St game neutral and clear back in December?

They actually play very different styles, BYU is much more perimeter oriented they rely heavily on the 3pt shot and an uptempo pace. Florida likes to slow the pace and let their guards drive and dish. They are a bad 3pt shooting team. So by same style if you are talking about the offense starting with the point guards then you would be somewhat right but other than that, they are very different. This is not the FLorida team that won back to back National titles by playing an uptempo style with athletic bigs.

You are right it was Neutral in Atlantic City. It was actually back in November, and Michigan State shot 52% in the game compared to FLoridas 41%. Florida was also only 5-24 from three.

You may not like this tangent, and I know if he reads it Space Ghost won't, but oh well. I didn't take what JL said as him taking himself to seriously. I also don't get why standing up for people you like it some negative comment on "21st century social morays".

Speaking only for myself, I spend a lot of time here, my wife would even argue too much time. I consider many of these people friends, rather I knew them only by monikers or by real life names. I see nothing sad or wrong with standing up for people that you consider friends. We live in an online world, many people have more communication online than offline, why should values of friendship and watching out for those you have concern about not transfer over to this venue? What it says to me is that you are not being real here, but rather are playing an online persona to live out something you don't feel you have in real life.

What I love about CUF is that most of our small community I feel act the same on the board as they do in real life. I have found this to be true with many here that I consider good friends on and off the board. Those aren't negative values, and make me like JL even more. FWIW, I don't know his real life name and that doesn't effect my feelings about him one bit.

While I agree with this post, I also agree with BITF that SUs schtick is growing tired and old. He needs to find something new.

I don't. They have poor eyesight and have been known to mistake a pointing finger for fish. Or maybe they are just grouchy and don't like ot be ponted at.

No offense is intended but you just made my point for me. If that's ok with you, that's fine, it's just a strange existence IMO. I have faith in the unseen, as in the all-mighty, but as for a stranger in front of a PC, I have no emotional attachment nor any faith in that person's allegiance. Again, I have "relationships" with many online, some for years, but I've eventually met those people in person and unless I'm willing to meet that person and socialize in a more truly social environment than that person doesn't give me much cause for concern. That's just me I guess. I certainly don't change who I am online from who I am in person, btw. I simply think it's an awkward place to be defending another's honor.

Florida's bigs are not the greatest, but Florda's strength is inside, and these guys are athletic. Florida is a developing team that may be a power next year. They are athletic bigs who run. Just looking at stats, they have pretty decent numbers against really tough competition. On the other hand, BYU's game is not inside. So, if you're talking about matchups, I think this is a tough matchup for BYU. Miles and the young BYU inside players will have their work cut out for them. I think it's going to be easier for Florida to turn this into a half court trench warfare game than for BYU to turn it into a full court run fest. And even if that happens, FL can run with BYU. Of course, FL has the athletes to play Jimmer, etc. man to man.

                              • Great stuff! SU is outdoing himself before the first tipoff. This thread could become the gift that keeps on giving if BYU wins a few games.
