Since we have performed better than the UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands when looking at covid19 deaths per million population, does that mean those countries are also were not progressive enough in the response to the pandemic? He's done a pretty good job but he appears to be struggling with the reopening decisions and that's what will make or break his performance. He needs to allow local control of things like beaches. Rather than shut down county controlled beaches he should open the state beaches so people can spread out more. Encourage San Diego and LA to do the same so people from those counties aren't crowding OC beaches. Ask people to voluntarily limit their beach visits to two hours and to go in off-peak hours if they can. Ask the local governments to clean the public restrooms several times a day.

The odds of a large out break caused by beach goers in sunny, hot weather has to be very low. Take some precautions and open them up.

I think the fear of screwing up has overwhelmed his administrations decision making process. How could he possibly imagine enforcing a closure at this point? That seems really dangerous to me—a powder keg of confrontation.

I like your idea of letting the counties decide how to open things up; let local governments put rules and restrictions in place, such as you have suggested. It is time to let local governments govern on this issue.

He saw a couple pictures of a group of people at Newport and assumed the same thing was happening everywhere. I went to two beaches in Ventura and everyone was social distancing so it was not happening everywhere, but since he made a point to say in his news conference that “this was the opposite of what we want to see” he closed them all. Same thing with schools. He announced that he told his daughter that school would be done for the year and then he closed all the schools. See, daddy was right!!

He is annoying and is virtue signaling. People have been social distancing in public, which is sufficient. There is plenty of room to spread out at the beach this time of year.

This is a direct result of people crowding up Orange County beaches last weekend and a totally coincidental spike in Covid-19 cases in Orange County. No, Gavin-- the people GOT THIS.

You're being irrational. The "crowding" everyone is complaining about mainly on Newport Beach happened less than a week ago. That is far shorter than the incubation period for any people that were infected those days at the beach. So if there is a spike now it can't be from the Newport Beach gathering.

Edit: also note that confirmed cases known to be spread in an outdoor environment between strangers are EXTREMELY low. Like zero.

Fair. But you're also not under a mandatory shelter in place order with the government closing all public outdoor spaces and now threatening legal action against those that disobey. I talk to people in NYC all the time for work. Obviously anecdotal but they are at the breaking point. They will endure longer if needed because of the severity of the outbreak in NYC. But places that are not severe need to start being reasonable. Cases will go up when you ease lockdowns. It is inevitable. We just want to control the spike as much as possible. Governors who want to keep it locked down until we go to zero cases are setting up an impossible scenario.
