"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

This is 99% of online political discourse. This place isn't unique in that way (although we are generally much more mild in our disagreements here).Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
Stick around!
One of the problems with the political category is some folks really struggle with nuance. Everything is black and white. Also, when some posters encounter an opinion that disturbs them, they seem personally offended and go after the poster in question rather than just counter the arguments. You just have to learn to ignore that stuff.
Nuance and composure in political discussions are exceedingly rare. Human nature I suppose. Certain personalities can navigate it much better than others. I love political discussions and don't get emotional often. But I'm not great at political debates and they'll stress me out. So I don't really engage in them. Open discussion of ideas and philosophy is more my speed.

You just answered your own question. I feel there are some on here that are not respectful.Originally posted by beefytee View PostI consider myself a moderate conservative. I try not to venture too much into politics these days though (I’m happier that way).
Do you not think people are respectful?

I ignore for the most part. That doesn't mean there isn't hostility. I can handle hostility but it tends to bring comments like Falawful's.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

You didn't make one. You're trying to emphasize Shaka isn't a MAGA guy and is critical of some parts of the ICE abuses.Originally posted by Moliere View Post
I rest my case.
Im not sure what he means by tweaking it because he hasn't exactly been critical.
JL, I'm expressing disagreement with Shaka. I don't hate him or think he is a bad person. In fact, I think he's a good dude.

I don't think personal attacks fly around very much here.Originally posted by USUC View Post

Why would that matter? The experience of people outside of one's own perspective and experience isn't the issue.Originally posted by Shaka View Post
Are there any of those on this board?"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
