Tax rates were also adjusted so they don’t go up next year, so that’s a savings for everyone."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

According to the story, the guy has a record of two pretty minor misdemeanors for which he already fulfilled his criminal penalties for and which were legally not considered to be deportable offenses. While still in the US the police wouldn't have been able legally to just snatch him off the street and detain him for those offenses anymore because they were resolved. So it seems wrong to me that it's ok for border officials to detain him for a month and a half over that. This is even more of a due process problem than an immigration one, and Trump's assault on due process has the potential of eventually hurting all of us.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post
He was being sarcastic.
You see, recently there was a story about some foreign guy traveling to the USA being detained at the border allegedly because he had some funny photo of JD Vance on his phone or something (I forget the exact details, but it was something trivial like that). Shaka and I both expressed slight skepticism at the story because, you know, even in the age of Trump sometimes stuff like this ends up just being bullshit. So now every time a wild story pops up they like to drop passive aggressive comments like that to imply we are idiots for ever doubting a story that paints the current administration in a bad light. Although in this case, a guy tries to enter the US and he is detained because he legit has a criminal record in the US, so it actually is quite a bit different from the other story, but let's not quibble over details. I agree it is horrible that it took 48 days or so to clear something up that should have taken a very short time.

No different from anyone here getting snatched in the street for 2 months for a speeding ticket

I don't know what I was looking at but it's not nearly so high as that. I get an extra $330 this year.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostMy spreadsheet says the BBB is giving me another $969 this year.
The rest of you probably get a bit more. Much of my income is already tax free.
Now I gotta go take some things out of my Amazon cart.

My compensation is weird this year. With the budget the state recently passed. I get a 3% cost of living increase, but furlough of 5 hours a month (that I get as leave), which equals a 3% reduction in pay. Also I don't have to pre pay my medical during retirement for the next 2 and that equals a 3% bump in my paycheck.

That is some creative bookkeeping. Sounds like they're taking a hit in one pot of money to plus up another.Originally posted by BigPiney View Post

tariff chaos round 2
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/06/bess...mp-august.html
cant they just take the W
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that tariffs announced back in April will take effect on Aug. 1 for countries that have not reached an agreement with President Donald Trump’s administration.
“President Trump’s going to be sending letters to some of our trading partners saying that if you don’t move things along, then on August 1, you will boomerang back to your April 2 tariff level,” Bessent said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
On Aug. 1, countries will “get a letter saying that if we have not reached an agreement, then you will go back to the April 2 level,” he said.
Bessent rejected the idea that Aug. 1 is yet another new tariff deadline, but the August date could still give trading partners more time to renegotiate tariff rates.

Its really a pretty good deal for most state workers. Talked for quite a while about it this weekend while on a run with an engineer. Seems to me that the current state administration is kicking the can down the road for future administrations to deal with. Good for your retirement, though. (although I thought it was 2% for future medical??? Maybe I mis-heard him).Originally posted by BigPiney View Post

Markets drop ~2%, TACO inevitably happens, markets regain lost value, just in time for TACO again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I could be wrong on that part. I just like the long term benefits of the 3% bump. A 3% increase in my retirement is good to me.Originally posted by bluegoose View Post

My daughter in law is Peruvian, I think she was sponsored by a family and came in under asylum, she has a ITIN number and works at the front desk for a hotel in MIdvale. She has a drivers licence, she pays taxes and she is working on getting a green card. They have a little one year old daughter, there is some real stress in their family about her being sent back to Peru. I worry about her getting a simple traffic ticket and being sent to Alligator Alcatraz and then back to Peru. I hate this current administration.Originally posted by Maximus View Postmore illegals to deport. maga:
