  • The politician who truly frightens me is Josh Hawley. Vance is someone's puppet. Hawley's dangerous because he seems to believe the stuff he says.

My favorite political podcasts are The Remnant (Jonah Goldberg), The Dispatch (a group of conservative writers), and The Ezra Klein Show (liberal) and I think those viewpoints are all welcome here. My favorite recent political book is The Triumph of Economic Freedom; Debunking the Seven Great Myths of American Capitalism (Gramm, Boudreaux), such as the myth that poverty is a failure of American capitalism, the myth and reality of income inequality, etc. I think well-reasoned arguments of any political viewpoint are welcome here. That said, I think the leading voices of MAGA (Trump and Vance, as well as Tucker, Hannity, etc.) are merely political opportunists and are morally (and in some cases intellectually) bankrupt.
Nothing shows up in bold. I'll address anyway. I never listen to the fellows you listed other than the JD Vance interview on Rogan. I rarely listen to Rogan unless there's someone on. I want to learn about. The Fetterman and Vance interviews were fantastic. My news is mostly Wall Street Journal and BBC. I look in on most of the major news networks on occasion.

While I think my viewpoints are well-reasoned I do not believe they are always welcome here. There's a contingent here that will go after you if you agree with Trump in any way. Believe it or not I pay attention to your posts as I consider you a CUF (reverting to the old style guide) voice of reason. I don't always agree but I know you're a reasonable person and make room for those with whom you disagree. I feel the same about others on here including our semi-fearless leader JL.

Do I agree with Trump all the time? No.

I like elements of the BBB but I hate the amount of spending contained therein.

I think Doge is a great idea and I'm pissed it seems to have petered out.

I don't mind Elon Musk although I think he's sometimes weird. I think he's quite brilliant, knows how to leverage talent, and heads companies that are a net positive for the world.

I wholeheartedly support kicking Russia's ass in Ukraine while acknowledging that the Ukraine has had a problem with corruption and has sometimes allowing the mistreatment of its ethnic Russian citizens. I also have no problem acknowledging that the United States and NATO broke their word/treaties and at times have provoked Russia. If it were up to me NATO would be on the ground driving the Russians out of Ukraine.

I'm fine with removing those who came into the country illegally, especially under Biden. His (I use the word loosely because he wasn't in control for much of his presidency.) immigration/border policy was insane.

I'm not fine with deporting the Dreamers and would like to see a one time Reaganeque amnesty granted to only them.

I'm fine with ICE being proactive in regards to rooting out illegals and deporting although I think they need to tweak their methods. I'm fine with agents wearing masks because there are a lot of looneys out there that will target them and their families should they be doxed.

I'm fine with legal protests that are peaceful and follow time, place, and manner restrictions. I'm not fine with with protests turning into riots, looting, blocking streets, and nerds dressed in black with masks calling themselves antifascists (Oh the irony!) who harass and threaten anyone who has differing views. If confronted by one I'd have no qualms about giving them a noogie followed by an atomic wedgie.

I'm fine with affording respect to the opinions of others as long as the do the same. I have a bunch of Democrat friends that fit the bill and I enjoy our conversations.

That's it from me for tonight as I have an appointment at the theater to watch F1.

      • I too am curious why you “don’t think there is much room for a moderate conservative” here. I consider myself a moderate conservative. I try not to venture too much into politics these days though (I’m happier that way). Most of my info comes from this board.

Do you not think people are respectful? I don’t think there are many as hominem attacks around here.

I don't know if he believes everything, but he is really smart and can be convincing.

why are you fine with them doing this at schools?

Why are you ok targeting children at all?

if someone is here 20-30 yrs, since there is no process of legalization when here, what is the value to the country of kicking them out?

the new ICE detention facility with alligators costs 90k per bed. 450M annually. we ae paying 3x the cost of a normal prisoner to house people who just didbt have papers 20 years ago

            • big beautiful bill:

Another goodie bordered on the obscure, if not for the senator: Bowhead whaling boat captains recognized by the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission will be able to deduct more for whale-hunting-related expenses, up to $50,000 from the current $10,000

Was that a pork item added to get Murkowski’s vote. Disgusts me that she said she doesn’t like the bill and hopes the House sends it back, but went ahead and voted for it anyways. All because they exempted Alaska from some of the more distasteful aspects of the bill.

This is exhibit A of the issue on this board. He literally said he thinks ICE needs to tweak their methods and this post ignores that and just continues to assume that Shaka is a heartless MAGA supporter.

What does "tweak their methods" mean? That sounds like a non-criticism of some pretty egregious behaviors.

Yet, there are those on here who like to assign the MAGA title to anyone who might have a moderately conservative opinion. The virtue signaling that goes on here sometimes is hilarious to me.

If you think you can make some kind of judgement from the space between our screens then have at it. I'm not worried about it.
                          Stick around!

One of the problems with the political category is some folks really struggle with nuance. Everything is black and white. Also, when some posters encounter an opinion that disturbs them, they seem personally offended and go after the poster in question rather than just counter the arguments. You just have to learn to ignore that stuff.
