In fascist terms, Canada is Austria to the USA’s Nazi’s Germany.Originally posted by frank ryan View Post
I'm not sure what is ridiculous about seeing that as concerning and pointing out that his perspective might be worth listening to.
He is fooling himself if he thinks there will be a radical change in the US that won’t completely engulf Canada.

no biggie man. why should we get all upset.Originally posted by frank ryan View PostTrump admin wants to force all immigrants here legally to give the fed access to their social media. This is pretty chilling stuff. They are scrutinizing people who have been vetted and passed background checks.
who cares if some randos legal residents get sent to el salvador. now I am curious what apathy looks like

Apathy is ICE arresting a dark-skinned US citizen for 10 hours, taking away his wallet with ID and social security card without even looking at the ID or asking about his citizenship and ignoring his protests that he was a US citizen.Originally posted by Maximus View Post

We can't allow this kind of strong armed government overreach to become acceptable. But unfortunately it's going in that direction.Originally posted by LVAllen View Post

You know, fascism, authoritarian state, dictatorship, these are all big scary words. So much so that a lot of people don't think it's possible to happen here. Too many checks and balances, too big of a bridge to cross. There is no way we could possibly be starting slowly down a slippery slope to these.Originally posted by BlueK View Post

Except we are slowly watch these things happen. This administration's blatant disregard for key points of the constitution like birthright citizenship, due process, equal protection, free speech. We have secret police snatching people off the street, and blatant racist policies being enacted. Our leader is openly imperialistic. Now Trump confirms he will likely seek a 3rd term. The frog is in the water, and it's starting to get pretty warm. Apathy might be the most dangerous thing during times like these, based on history.
I'm ready for all the "oh brothers", "take the L", "no nuance" etc. Tribalism sure can be blinding.

about every week they're getting more brazen. When does it become citizens being taken in the night by thugs over something they posted online? What assurance is there that it isn't something Trump would want to do?Originally posted by Maximus View PostYou know within 6 months it'll be citizens they dissappear accidently and no Republicans will say anything

Jason Stanley is the epitome of an academic losing all objectivity to political tribalism. Anything he doesn't like is "clearly" fascism. He would have more credibility if he hadn't lost his mind to tribalism years ago. He attacked moderates advocating for liberalism.
I'm disgusted that moderate progressive illiberalism has been replaced by a more extreme conservative illiberalism. twitter and news feeds are nothing but stress and anger inducing. I understand the apocalyptic reactions this thread is overwhelmed with. But I don't have much compassion for all this now when y'all hand waved away all the authoritarian nonsense from progressives the past decade. Is Trump worse? Yes. But Trump doesn't happen in a vacuum. If prefer a liberal America that is deferential to process and rule of law. Each party has just continually gone in the opposite direction, out doing the last. Let's all hope a truly moderate Democrat who respects the rule of law arises out of this nonsense. I want this to be rock bottom.

That's dismissive and hyperbolic. Trump is fucking with the rule of law. He's now talking about trying to run for a third term. As he will try and continue to make it a reality along with cronies, will you scold those of us who sounded the alarm? How about if he uses the border situation to declare Marshall law? There are other academics leaving too btw.Originally posted by USUC View PostJason Stanley is the epitome of an academic losing all objectivity to political tribalism. That's fascist stuff. This is not liberal vs conservative. We are past that. It's MAGA against whatever group they choose. Right now that includes people who are here legally but use their right to free speech to criticize the wrong people.
