If a crazy soldier that went AWOL is worth five high ranking Taliban then imagine what a non-crazy one would be worth.

Can there really be any doubt that the released Taliban are not being used for American purposes? I'm sure their every move is being tracked. I can't see how they would pose a threat under these circumstances. The CIA could snatch them back up momentarily. They are in Qatar. They aren't going anywhere.

I read somewhere that an American soldier stationed in South Korea during the 1960s deserted to North Korea because he feared he'd be sent to Vietnam. He lived there for 40 years and married a Japanese woman who was being held there too. I think he taught English to NK military types. Eventually he decided to go home. He was court-martialed, given 30 days' confinement, and dishonorably discharged. Then he went on his way and I think lives in the USA somewhere. Something like that -- the court martial, at least -- should happen in this case too. But it's too politicized now.

The official, who spoke about the sensitive details of Bergdahl’s case on the condition of anonymity, said that Bergdahl is not being interrogated at the American military medical facility in Germany, to which he was brought this weekend after being released from five-year captivity by the Taliban. The official said there are legitimate concerns about Bergdahl’s physical and mental health, which have deteriorated over the years – so serious that doctors have cautioned officials and family not to reach out to even just say “welcome back” yet.

Well duh, anyone that spends 5 years as a POW is going to have some mental health issues. I'm more interested in his mental health state when he deserted.

Well, duh yourself. All doctors can do is tell you what his behavior was symptomatic of. It sure sounds like serious trauma and a crisis building up.

I wonder if HIPAA prohibits military doctors from discussing a patient's physical and mental health status in violation of his/her privacy rights. Maybe there is an exception to HIPAA if it helps the White House deflect public criticism over a prisoner exchange.

Bergdahl deserves justice. After he's back in the USA there should be an Article 32 hearing (the military equivalent of a preliminary hearing, to detemine whether there is enough evidence to charge him). Then, if warranted, the man should be given a court martial. If he really was mentally ill the supporting facts will come out in the trial. If he was a deserter, or simply AWOL, that will all come out. Or maybe there's another story that is true. I think it would be fair to him to clear his name, if he deserves that, rather than leave a cloud over his head for the rest of his life. If he violated the Uniform Code of Military Justice, he should be punished. Maybe he'll get 30 days of confinement like the Korean War deserter. I just wonder if the system will be allowed to work.

Good post. Going awol and being in a mental health crisis aren't exactly mutually exclusive.

That would be ironic....he gets released by the Taliban, comes home to Idaho and gets beheaded.
