Anyone hear of Bowe Bergdhal? From Hailey Idaho in Afghanistan and was I think away from unit and taken prisoner four years ago. A move to bring him home. Too bad what happened did, But some of it I think was caused by his foolishness stay with unit. A few sides to story. I know some people in military don't think highly of him. Hopefully he is released. But what he did did not help much.

Grape kind of a cheap shot to say some army ppl don't think highly of him. I don't think highly of some army guys. His release is fantastic news. He endured years in captivity, which in itself is very impressive.

The only American solider held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed from Taliban captivity in exchange for the release of five Afghan detainees from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Obama administration officials said Saturday.

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was handed over to U.S. special forces by the Taliban Saturday evening, local time, in an area of eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border. Officials said the exchange was not violent and the 28-year-old Bergdahl was in good condition and able to walk.


In a statement, President Barack Obama said Bergdahl's recovery "is a reminder of America's unwavering commitment to leave no man or woman in uniform behind on the battlefield."

The detainees are believed to be the most senior Afghans still held at the prison. They are believed to be:


—Abdul Haq Wasiq, who served as the Taliban deputy minister of intelligence


—Mullah Norullah Nori, a senior Taliban commander in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif when the Taliban fought U.S. forces in late 2001


—Khairullah Khairkhwa, who served in various Taliban positions including interior minister and had direct ties to Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden


—Mohammed Nabi, who served as chief of security for the Taliban in Qalat, Afghanistan, and later worked as a radio operator for the Taliban's communications office in Kabul


—Mohammad Fazl, whom Human Rights Watch says could be prosecuted for war crimes for presiding over the mass killing of Shiite Muslims in Afghanistan in 2000 and 2001 as the Taliban sought to consolidate their control over the country.

I see as a good move by Obama. I think they were running low on targets and this gives them some more. It's hunting season again.

Has anyone found anything positive said by those who claim to have served with him in his actual platoon or company? From what I can gather many of them seem to feel the kid is a deserter. I might hold off even if you don't think highly of army guys until there is an opportunity to get to the bottom of what happened to SGT Berdahl. If in fact he is a deserter that is not the type of individual whose actions we would want to reference as "impressive" even if he was able to stay alive while captured.

I am happy he is out of Taliban control. I am happy for his parents as well. I also think questioning the wisdom of the trade is extremely legitimate and that the circumstances surrounding his capture is part of that evaluation. If in fact he did desert his unit, I am not a believer in trading the high payoff targets we did. But that is likely a better evaluation made by the civilains as my guess is, if he is found to be a deserter, you will find most who have worn the uniform to not have a great deal of sympathy towards him. I will further say that those with the capacity to have empathy, in that they actually were in harms way in Afghanastan alongside him, are likely to be even more unfavorably disposed than just the regular fellows who once wandered around in uniform.

I am of course extremely happy for him and his family. If these 5 who were let out eventually kill some Americans, I won't be happy for those families. Since that hasn't happened yet, I am happy for him and his family.
