That doesn't mean he shouldn't be deported, but why must Trump/DHS always resort to hyperbolic observations such as, "This repeat offender is now off our streets and no longer able to terrorize Americans."
I agree about the hyperbole. Both from Trump and from the left, framing it as if DHS deported this veteran just to be mean. I think we’d all do well to give it a beat or two before responding to the latest outrage. Sometimes the outrage is warranted. Other times maybe not. Once outraged it’s difficult to allow new information in.

Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

The key word for deportation purposes is if any conviction is for a "crime of moral turpitude." Back when I was a prosecutor, I had defendants willing to plead to more serious offenses as long as they were not included in the moral turpitude list from ICE. Once there is a conviction of such a crime, no matter the severity, the immigration status can be addressed even if a permanent resident. Unless the order was really not known about or the hearing properly served, as his family alleges, I cannot see a positive result for him. All that being said, it appears that his missed hearing was nearly 10 years after my prosecution gig, so take my experience for what its worth.

        • I don’t know what the Canadian equivalent of ICE is, but today I’m breathing a sigh of relief. I just got my permanent resident status up here. I can start driving a little more reckless now I guess.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

            • The officers told nurses Castañeda Mondragón “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall,” an account his caregivers immediately doubted. A CT scan showed fractures to the front, back and both sides of his skull — injuries a doctor told AP were inconsistent with a fall.

“There was never a wall,” Castañeda Mondragón said in Spanish, recalling ICE officers striking him with the same metal rod used to break the windows of the vehicle he was in. He later identified it as an ASP, a telescoping baton routinely carried by law enforcement.

Training materials and police use-of-force policies across the U.S. say such a baton can be used to hit the arms, legs and body. But striking the head, neck or spine is considered potentially deadly force.

                    • ICE isn't infallible. They've detained for five months now one of the good white people Trump wishes would immigrate to the U.S.

                      • Had dinner the other day with a guy who works in a local law office that does a lot of immigration work. They represent a lot of immigrants. I expected him to go off on ICE. He said that they haven't had too many issues with ICE in Utah. He said they mainly go after people with no legal status plus some kind of criminal record.

                        FWIW.

                          In Utah.

Red state. That's a lot of what you need to know.

                            Thanks for sharing.

Did he expand on how ICE goes about its business here in Utah? Similar to Minnesota (doing sweeps to find immigrants) or more research and regular police work? Or something different?

Who does he represent? Those with some form of status, or those without status at all?

                            Sorry for all the questions.

He made it sound like they generally go after specific people rather that doing sweeps.

                              • I used to stay out of any threads where TedBot was posting tiresome tweets during the election. It looks like TedBot has now been replaced by NoahBot.

6 tweets in one hour this morning? Dude, take a breather and "go touch grass", as the kids say these days. NoahBot is becoming just as tiresome/tedious as TedBot was.
